Present for female high school graduate

A daughter of a good friend of mine is graduating from high school. She had some rough bits in school so I'm very happy she's graduating. I was thinking of giving her a handbag. Her mother says she has similar tastes to me. I was thinking of spending up to about $200 (sorry no Chloe or Givenchy). Any suggestions or brands I should look for?

Can't give any suggestions as a member of handbag impaired, but I think the one you linked is great! I'd have happily sported that in high school, and would happily sport now

Hrm, I don't know your handbag tastes too well, so I'm just going off your picture. Other brands that come to mind around that price range with interesting hardware/edgier details are B. Makowsky, Hype, maybe Betsey Johnson... a smaller LAMB might fall into your price range, too.

Somewhat OT, this post got me thinking about the gifts I received at my high school graduation 6 years ago, and I can say with great certainty that the grad gift that I have used the most is a leatherman (specifically http://www.leatherman.com/product/Kick) that I received from a family I babysat for. At the time I wasn't exactly crazy about the gift, but it has been so handy over the years.

I really love this bag and I think it is a very nice thing to do.

I only wish it was leather. To me that has connotations of importance, quailty, longevity and the long commitment it takes to complete your education.

Maybe I am projecting my own feelings about bags. I always regret faux handbag purchases. No matter how cute they seem in the store they just don't have the substancial feel of a quality leather bag.

Well, that really will depend on what she likes. I'm super bad at bags, but PERSONALLY I don't like that one. But then again, it's not me who's going to receive the present, right? Hope I haven't offended you, just wanted to be honest. Hope you find a great gift for her!!

I think the L.A.M.B Brigitte or Montfort bags you linked or the L.A.M.B. mini cross body that Inge linked would be great for a high school girl. I can tell you I would have been in heaven if someone got me such a killer bag when I graduated.

I bet she'll love anything you chose. You have a great, youthful, edgy style that most girls (who am I kidding, lots of women too) would love to emulate.

With the first one, my thought was that the chain strap looks uncomfortable. I think they are good looking but they are not so nice to the touch.

I love all of the LAMB bags that are leather.

My 15 yr old grand daughter loves to use her mom's LAMB bag when she can.

In defense of the Matt & Nat bag, their bags do NOT feel or look like cheap, fake leather. They are high quality faux leather, made for people who specifically look for vegan bags (as opposed to bags that are faux leather because they are made to be cheap). I own several Matt & Nat bags and I think they look just as nice as my leather bags (purchased before I stopped buying leather). In fact, I have one pebbled Matt & Nat bag that looks and feels just like my pebbled Kate Spade purse. So I wouldn't worry about that at all.

Have you seen this specific version of Matt & Nat, Anna? Personally, I'm not very fond of their newer finishes (looks more plasticy than others), but the La Roux is a fun awesome bag. Last year they had a finish called Stellar, which was more distressed looking (I also like the Hendrix and Santogold Stellar clutches, they could still be available online).

I like your taste I really like all the LAMB bags mentioned, especially the Montfort and Brigitte. It's hard to decide without knowing more about the recipient. The Brigitte can fit lots of things inside, so it could even be used as a school bag of sorts. The grey is a super color. The Montfort is adorable and the detailing makes me drool, but it's canvas, so I don't know. I'm kind of stalking the larger version of that bag. Actually I like the other two LAMBs as well, so in fact I'm of no help whatsoever.
I would have loved to have a stylish style mentor like you when I was that age. And to have any of those bags.

I'd totally go for any LAMB bag. At 18, labels are important and LAMB is pretty recognizable and cool!

Is she off to college in the fall? If so my instinct would be more of something that can be used to carry around books and notes or even a laptop. As much as I liked the idea of small-medium bags, I virtually never used them when I was in school. There was just too much to lug around.

Agree with Steph. I have two Matt and Nat bags and both have been great. One served me beautifully when I was a student and survived much overstuffing, banging and mashing on the train, and plenty of other abuse on a daily basis. Much easier to clean than leather too. The other is newer but even more fantastic.
