With a lot of "scheming" I was able to wrangle an hour at a large Nordstrom well over an hour away without traffic. I asked an SA where the Encore department was. I was told that the store no longer had one, and that the store had replaced it with a restaurant.
Then I realized that my local store had expanded, added a restaurant, and eliminated the same department.
I wonder if the long term plan is to go online only for larger sizes.

That is so disappointing! I hope you were able to have a nice lunch or something to console yourself. I wonder why they would do that. Only being able to shop online for the right sizes is extremely frustrating. It's just not the same as being able to choose in person. When I browse a website and then go somewhere in person I find I choose totally different things because real life is just not the same as a picture.

That is SO frustrating! I would contact Nordstrom's and ask about it. They ought to clarify if the department won't exist in real stores.

That would be a very strange direction for them to go, given all the attention being given to diversity of body types and for acceptance of larger bodies--unless the plan is to expand the range of sizes available throughout the store.

I understand your frustration - I just returned $1500 of items that were "excess size try-ons" from NAS.

Well, that stinks.

My two local stores have eliminated petites departments and now have racks of petite sizes scattered around the store, near the racks of regulars, with very small "petites" signs. It makes it much harder to find them in the store and I wonder if the next step is to eliminate them completely in store. I say something to the SAs every time I visit and they reply that they have heard the same complaint from lots of customers and pass thise complaints on to "corporate" but it's not going to change.

I have gotten used to doing a lot of my shopping online but I stil don't like what they are doing.

Complain! They need to hear it.
I'm sorry they eliminated the section. It doesn't seem to make much sense to me.

I'm sorry. I shop online because there's no store nearby, but to have a store not even carry your size is really annoying. I guess they don't mind all the online sales and returns. Not just annoying, but also inefficient. And dumb.

That must have been so disappointing and frustrating! I agree with fashiontern -- it seems like a strange strategy.

I completely understand your frustration. I need petites and the Ottawa Nordstrom doesn't carry any. There's just no substitution for trying things on in person. So many stores choose to only cater to "average" size bodies.

When the San Francisco store remodeled, they greatly reduced the size of Petite Focus. This looks to me like the first step in eliminating the department. It's not like SF has a dearth of sub-sized Asians!

Thanks for the commiseration everyone. Wow, I did not realize petite departments were also diminishing.

I also have purchased items in store that I never would have purchased online, and I have purchased many, many items during NAS in multiple sizes and colors, only to return all of them.

I would say, please don't boycott as it is still better to have a B&M store to try on shoes, etc. as I am as hard to fit in shoes as clothing. I will inquire, but I think that a letter to headquarters will probably be the most effective. But I bet the decision is profit driven. Even in T.J.Maxx the clothing section is shrinking and the other sections are increasing.

We'll see if I make it this year to the third store in a city I never go to over an hour away to check out what's there. You can bet that I will call first. I'm trying to scope it out for next year, but my guess is that I will skip it next year and then figure out the changing landscape for 2019.

And I want to mention that in spite of my complaints, I realize that I am lucky to live somewhere that within an hour to an hour and a half, I do have options. Including outlets, which sometimes seem to work best for me.

I'm sorry about your frustrating experience today. I can completely relate to this as Nordstrom and most other stores have vastly reduced or eliminated their petite departments. I now basically buy everything online. This also means a lot of UPS deliveries and trips back to the post office to return all the items that don't fit.

So...after reading the other comments, I wonder if the clothing will still be there, just added to the range of sizes available throughout the store in the other departments?

I may start with asking the manager of my local store, as I received a bulk email from him before NAS suggesting booking an appt. with a stylist.

Kind of tying in with what Emily wrote, in the *old days*, the local department store in my town had clothes by type, rather than by size or manufacturer. So, for example, now you might find a section for EF, or petites, back then, you would have looked in Ladies' sweaters, or Ladies' dresses. Maybe they're returning to that, at least by size?

Grrr. So frustrating! I have the same issue with petite departments. And the few retailers that carry a small petite section in their brick and mortar stores get a lot more business from me - I often seem to find something that appeals in person, that I would not have ordered on line.

I recently took time out to visit an Anthropologie store in the Sacramento area and was so annoyed to find they didn't carry petite size in store (I had only been to the San Francisco store, which does).

I know retailers allocate floor space on their perception of profit, but it seems like this is a self fulfilling prophecy - they shrink size and selection of petites and plus so much, of course sales drop!
