Potential cocktail wear piece #1 - lace dress

In my recent thread on building a cocktail wear capsule Angie made a lot of great suggestions (thank you Angie). I have been thinking about those and realized that I already have some of the pieces that technically fit her description but am not really sure if they are right for this capsule or not. So I will be posting them for your evaluation. ( I already own and am keeping these items, just wondering if they fit this particular need).

First item: Angie suggested a lace dress. I have had this halter matte gold one for a while and wore to a lot of weddings with these same gold sandals. Typically I will apply a little self tanner and wear a true red lipstick with it. For some reason though, this dress screams wedding to me and not cocktail reception in an embassy. What do you think, appropriate for my capsule or not?

I think it's a very pretty dress! Although perhaps a little naked for the Embassy???

Thank you Angie! I think that you have nailed what was bugging me bu I couldn't quite articulate. I think this dress retains it's original purpose, for weddings and such, and I will look for a different one for this capsule.

I agree, it is really pretty, but it looks a bit too "daytime" to me.

So pretty! I think will be quite suitable if you team it with a black or white short and stramlined or a boyfriend or 7/8length(but left open) evening blazer/jacket/tux and some closed toe pumps(gold, beige, or two toned beige/white/black) or some heavier weight polished sandals.

For embassy, its a little exposing. But you could wear it with a black boyfriend blazer. And you have transformed it from day wedding dress to a more conservative environment.

I think if it is gold/sparkle-y and not just a flat beige it could morph over into evening wear. And don't forget that you can make a *fake* skirt with it by layering a fancy top over it. I'm thinking something knit, with lurex and dolman sleeves perhaps with a cold shoulder detail. If it's fairly loose, you wouldn't be able to see the lines of the halter underneath.

Claire is so clever. I think it's do-able, too. But without a bit more coverage up top I think it's not quite the right thing for Embassy parties. Though you look gorgeous in it, as always!!

I think you could also layer a button-front under it to make it less exposing. Maybe a soft chiffon blouse? And a shiny necklace?

Do you have a dressy enough white blazer? I think this would look great with white.

In other words, I am agreeing that this is a bit bare for DC work-type parties.

Wow, this dress is gorgeous on you. Seriously. Love the gold lace. I agree that on its own, it's a bit too...va-va-voom?...for the embassy. You can easily remedy that with Claire's suggestions, or a fitted jacket, or other fab topper. Simply stunning dress!

At this point I will stay away from wearing it to embassy events and keep t for weddings. Once I find the right tuxedo jacket, or a dressy blazer of other type, than I will probably give it a whirl.
