Hey, everbody. This post will probably be long, so maybe you want to pour another glass of wine as I have done.

I realize that I had hi-jacked nice, sweet thistle's thread, therefore want to divert it. Thank you Thistle and I am sorry I did. If I remember correctly you have two small children, and your time is most valuable. (I speak from experience, many, many years ago I was the mother of three small children, and am now the mother of three large children. Thistle, I do enjoy all your posts. They help in keeping me younger in my thinking.

Joha, thank you. Now I understand what VAT is. JenniNZ and Sal, thanks for your reply to me on thistle's hi-jacked by me thread. lol. Anyway, I became so interested in the comments on varying tax rates, I knew I would have more comments including this one.

I am just kidding in the title to post your sales tax here. That was just to get your attention! I would be so overwhelmed if I got a reply from someone in each state or country I wouldn't know what to do! LOL However, if I met someone new and at a loss of words my weird sense of humor makes me think a good conversational starter might be: Hi, what is the tax rate where you live?

And seriously, I do find the discussion interesting, and if you have any other comments please post on this thread. Look forward to them.

Ours is 8.265 percent. This is state and local combined.

Technically New Mexico doesn't have a sales tax, it has gross receipts tax. I'm not sure what the difference is though. In Albuquerque it's 7.5% currently. It changes slightly every six months.

15%here... federal and provincial combined, and added on at the cash register.

Alberta has a 5% GST (Goods and services tax). No provincial sales tax at this time. Our GST is not added in to the prices (unless specifically stated), I've learned to do mental calculations quite efficiently to see what something 'actually' costs.

As Brooklyn says, 10%. It's on goods apart from some food, and is included in the price. I remember when it came in, as I got an increase in my pay packet, as they decreased income tax at the same time. (More than compensated I think, owing to my frugal habits!)

Minnesota is 6.875% but clothing here is not taxable currently. There has been some talk in the past about passing a law to tax higher end clothing.

10.1% in Seattle. I had to look it up, I knew it was close to 10%, but we recently passed some mass transport levies.

Across the state, my hometown is 7.8%

Washington state has no income tax.

13% (HST- harmonized sales tax) in Ontario. Added at the register.

15 percent in NZ. Retail prices include this- businesses can claim it back. We also have income tax and a few other taxes.

13% in Ontario. Same as Carla. That is Provincial and Federal combined (Harmonized). I also shop in Quebec and the Provincial Tax might be different. I can't remember what it is. Higher probably.

Hi Bridgie. You had me wondering. Here is what I found:

The North Carolina (NC) state sales tax rate is currently 4.75%. Depending on local municipalities, the total tax rate can be as high as 7.5%. County and local taxes in most areas bring the sales tax rate to 6.75% – 7% in most counties but some can be as high as 7.5%.

I'll be paying more attention in the future, but I do think I pay 7.5%.

I have no idea what ours is in Texas. We have no sales tax on groceries (which doesn't include the non-food things sold in the grocery store). Then we have our tax-free weekends, initiated to help parents with back-to-school expenses. We also have our hurricane preparation weekend, which is designed to encourage people to plan ahead: generators, tarps, materials to board up windows, and certain other items are tax exempt during that time period. We have hotel taxes that are completely different from sales taxes. We have our "sin" taxes on things like cigarettes and probably booze. And because this is texas, I'd almost bet that guns and such are either tax-exempt or tax-free (I'm only half kidding when I say that, the other half of me very seriously wants to know).

I'll be over here hanging my head in shame. I'm in New Hampshire ("Live Free or Die") -- no sales tax, no income tax, but the property taxes are some of the highest in the US. I think it's a pretty unfortunate model that makes buying and owning a home much more difficult for those who are low income (we pay more per month in property taxes than we do for our mortgage principal), and the no-income-tax policy disproportionately benefits those with high incomes. We definitely do not plan to retire here -- once you're on a fixed income, the ever-increasing property taxes really hurt.

There is a movement here to overhaul the tax system, but I don't know that it's gained much traction. Even if taxation was distributed more evenly, people would feel like they were paying more (and a few people would end up paying more). I grew up in Vermont, and many people would plan big shopping trips to NH to avoid paying sales tax. I guess the argument for 0% sales tax is that it makes NH appealing to retail business and shoppers and boosts the economy...

bridgie, ha! You and I share a weird sense of humor and interest in the arcane. Maybe we will meet at a party some day and I'll recognize you by your unique opening line!
State sales tax in Texas is 6.25%. County, city and special purpose districts can add on up to 2%, for a max of 8.25%.
We pay sales tax on most services, as well as goods. So haircuts, plumbing services, etc are all taxable. My personal favorite provision of our laws is that massage service provided by "massage parlors, Turkish baths and escort services" are taxable, while those provided by licensed massage therapists are not!
We have no state income tax.

In Quebec, the sales taxes (federal + provincial) is 15%. Just like Style Fan, I also shop in Ontario where it's 13%, but where I live, rents are cheaper on the Quebec side, and more expensive on the Ontario side, which affects pricing, therefore there's often little difference on the final bill or even sometimes it's cheaper in Quebec despite the higher sale tax.

I think it's around 8% here. There is no state income tax, so overall the state budget is too low for the things they need to do.

Do you guys have federal income tax as well as (in some states) state income tax? I'm fascinated!

Our states in Australia gave up their income taxing rights in WW2 IIRC. Our GST is collected by the federal gov but given back to the states (in somewhat different proportions from how it is collected, a continual grievance of my state government).

We don't have sales taxes at local government level either (just rates).

Interesting! Manitoba's sales tax is 8% and is added to Canada's GST of 5%, for a total of 13points on a purchase.

Just to hijack your thread it is more expensive to shop in Montreal(Quebec) than Ontario but so so so worth it.

I want to add: My state doesn't have state income tax. We also have low property tax. There's a price to be paid for that: we are worst in good things such as high school graduation rates, and tops in bad things such as teen pregnancy.

6% in PA (no tax on clothing or shoes) In addition to PA state tax, we pay a 1.10% local tax (I live in the suburbs of NE PA). I live about 20 minutes from NJ and I think their sales tax is higher.
