Possible trip to Sydney!

My sister has kindly invited me to be her date/servant at the Sydney film festival in June! I was thinking of going to the Tribeca one in April in NY, but Sydney sounds way better except for the hellish flight.

Aussies, what's the weather like in mid-June? I have a good idea of film festival dress code, but temps will matter. And if there's any chance of a meet-up that would be awesome too.

In all your festival-ing this past year have you seen the film, Salam Neighbor? It's about the Syrian refugees. One of my friends has produced it and is presently on a festival circuit with it.

Oh boy, how exciting! You won't find it that cold compared to Alaska! Maximum temps in early winter are in the 16 to 18 c (60 to 65 f) range. And not unusual for them to be a bit higher. We think of 13 (55) as a really cold day. Ha ha! But that's rare. Overnight it gets colder but not that cold. But it does get much colder in Canberra and Melbourne, if you plan to go there.
My tip for long haul flights is to get yourself some good quality noise cancelling headphones like Bose - it is amazing how dulling the sound of the plane engines improves your overall experience. Also, you will hear the inflight movies better.
And it would be great to meet up!

I would think winter in Sydney might be like spring or fall in Seattle or Portland. I have been to Sydney in winter and it has been stunning, but it is unpredictable.

Sounds a great thing to do and Sydney is a fab city to visit.

Yes, you must do this! Sydney is a fabulous city. Over the course of several years, I spent the winter months of June and July living on a catamaran sailboat (no heat) in Sydney Harbour and it was no problem at all. I'm from the San Francisco Bay Area and Sydney's climate is closer to Los Angeles/San Diego. I think you'll be fine with a light coat or raincoat (or the jackets you don't get to wear enough in Anchorage). As far as the long flight, I just bring some trashy books to read and enjoy watching on the map that I'm passing over the equator and near Fiji, etc.

Already looking forward to photos of the Aussie meet-up.

Do keep in touch, a meet up would be awesome. I am in another state..but hey who knows what's possible.

Ooh, exciting. I love to picture (and see pictures of) these international YLF meet ups. Brooklyn offers a great tip for long-haul flights; I find the background noise of an aircraft can be draining, you hear it even when you don't, if that makes sense. My long-haul tip is to take snacks. Unless you are flying first class, they only seem to feed you one, maybe two small meals. I can't sleep on flights, and going more than 8 hours without eating just makes me focus on how hungry I am. As a non-sleeper, I like an aisle seat so I can get up and move around without feeling trapped in by the sleepers. Of course, if you can sleep, you're golden!

Ooh! I'm from Sydney, but currently living in Brisbane to the north.
It will be winter, and for Australians, Sydney in winter needs a coat. But I suspect you will not find it very cold. Might be around 18 degrees celsius in the day? With options a bit either side. Sydney is generally sunny and fine in winter, but global warming has made it a bit more erratic. If it does rain, it would usually be for a few days, but really I reckon you'd be unlucky. It can be very beautiful in winter, cool and very clear and sunny.
One difference you might find is that things are not that well heated in Australia. Unlike Europe, where it is cold outside and warm inside, in most parts of Australia it is not stuffy inside, and indeed you may even be coolish. I notice this a lot.

Thanks for all the great input and advice! Sadly, I may not make this trip after all due to the need for surgery and time for recovery. I am SO disappointed.... Australia remains on my bucket list!
