Pondering a new coat - YouLookFab Forum

I feel like I have plenty of coats but need another one that is warm yet light weight. Many of you can probably relate : )

My current winter inventory is
1. black wool/angora knee length dress coat that is too big, but rarely needed so I make do.
2. navy wool toggle coat with hood. Kind of snug and very heavy.
3. two unlined wool jackets, one burgundy and one periwinkle. Similar to this link but the style has changed somewhat

4. brown hooded Land's End down coat - in the picture. Toasty warm.

Angie posted a Vince Camuto coat for Una a while back, which I find intriguing.

Without seeing it in person I think it is probably dressy enough for my needs but could still be worn as an everyday coat if it would be warm enough in 30F degree weather. On breathtakingly cold days the down coat comes out of the closet.

The other option I've found is a Lands End quilted down car coat - very plain.

Included is a picture of me in the down coat, just for reference. I kind of feel that the belting and double breasted buttons on the VC coat would be too much for my belly area. It's frustrating knowing I *kind of* have a waist under there but it doesn't want to come out to play.

Also, the length on my down coat is 36" from the base of the neck to the hem. The regular length on the VC coat is 35" and petite is 34".

I do like the VC coat much better than the Lands End coat. I empathize with you on the issue with a double breasted coat, as I can't wear them either. For me, the solution was a single breasted trench coat with a waist belt,because I could hide the belly but still get that hourglass look. Would you consider a lined trench (even better if the lining zips out) or would that be too lightweight for you?

I've got the Vince Camuto jacket and love it, but I was surprised when it arrived that there was a very slight metallic sheen to the wool parts on sleeves, shoulders, etc. Which may be a positive or a negative for you... I really like the nod to military style that the coat has (shoulders and cuffs in particular) as I think the structure is both flattering and interesting. I think it is worth a try as I find I frequently look off in double breasted coats, but found the length plus belting plus detailing combined to make something I find flattering for me. It's a more "fashion-y" coat than the Land's End, in my opinion (and I had a shorter version of that Land's End jacket last year). Give it a shot, you may be surprised.

Fashion-wise, I do like the Vince coat. The way it's not entirely quilted and the way you can create a waist with the belt.

The Land's End, tho, is not bad. Bright color, not as unshapely as it can get. I suppose the one thing that might make me go for this one is -- I depend on no other coat as much as my brown Land's End puffer.

Sylvie, I think I need more than a lined trench unless the lining is really warm. I haven't looked for something like that yet.

Kat, the metallic sheen would be a plus. How does the coat look not belted? How warm do you find it to be?

Rachylou, I'd probably get the heathered black - looks gray in the picture. I typically wear a scarf with my coats so some bright gloves might help give it some zip.

I'd give the VC coat a try. You can always return it if it doesn't work. And at this stage it is great to try things you might have written off in the past.

I belt if it's buttoned, but wore it this morning (temp in the high 40s) unbuttoned and with belt tied at back for a bit of shape. I think either way gives a bit of shape at the waist that I like. I definitely find that you can play with the lapels (in stock photo you can see that model doesn't have it entirely buttoned and has folded over the lapel--this makes me look wider than I like, so I just tried a lot of variations). I expect the coat to work with appropriate clothing (sweaters and layering t or other underlayer if it's really cold) into the 20sF for standing/walking outside and colder if it's just car to building type weather. I tend to run cold, so .....

Thanks for sharing your experience, Kat. I think I may go ahead and order both petite and regular.
