I’m rather surprised at people’s dislike of the polo. Just for a laugh here’s our heated towel rack right at this moment: three blue polos drying after the wash. Not sure what hubs would do without them!

I was thinking I'd have to see it styled, and then I saw Colette's example. I think it's perfect. I'd wear that in a heartbeat, rigth up my preppy alley.

Oops, I fell down the pinterest rabbit hole. However, after looking at these pictures, I think I need some polo shirts for summer, at least a white and a black. They would really fit in well with my style and would be a step up from my vneck tshirts for casual wear.
The trick would be to find one with nice, soft material but stiff neck (so it doesn't look sloppy, I hate that), cut closer to the body, and with a deep vneck. A tall order it seems.

I don’t dislike them, but there are so many other silhouettes that I’m exploring, that polos aren’t high on my list. Nonetheless, Bella, you’ve provided some great inspiration! I like #5- a little different, since the shirt seems to not have the trademark buttons on the placket.

I’m a small mixed vocal ensemble and was a little off-put when our new group outfit included a black logo polo - ack! Black “performance” fabric -the shape of my middle-aged middle is a bit too exposed for my taste. Even in black.

I like some of the Pinterest styling, but as usual, younger, fitter figures look terrific in this shape. I wore them the first time around, doubt if I’ll indulge this time.

I’m moving away from many softer knits worn on their own. I feel better in clothes with some type of structure that give me a shape.

Ok, I am officially obsessed! I just remembered that I also adore polo shirt dresses as a casual option, and had some that I really liked back when.

Their practicality and wearablity has been a little overshadowed by some baggage, like association with standard employee wear and prep style but I still appreciate that they're way more dressed than a t shirt, collars can be flattering, and the mesh they're often made of is cooling and durable.

I used to wear the three button banded short sleeve variety all the time with cutoffs but now I would want something with sleeves at least to the elbows and a little shaping on the sides.

I just don't like them, which is kind of a shame because they come in the most FUN colors. They're a hard no for me, although I do enjoy seeing them on people with a very preppy style.

Maybe 15 years ago I had a black one pretty much identical to Bella’s first photo — fitted, not stiff, angled cap sleeves, and a placket and collar that were tailored to sit open nicely, creating a flattering V neck effect. I wore the heck out of that shirt. I would wear that cut again in a heartbeat. It was a refined polo style that didn’t evoke Target employee or golf course.

I just remembered I have a couple polo dresses. One is turquoise and the other is melon. They’re nice in summer with cute sandals. They’re from Lands End.

My husband is wearing a polo right now: olive and pale blue stripes. It looks good on him.

May be but it would have to be a neat fit and a deep v with preferably puffy shoulders! So if all that came together probably. The yellow and black combination above looks very good (but a bit bumble bee perhaps). I’m thinking that they are preppy. Not a bad thing but just saying.

Big gif me anymore. Ghd collar style us not flattering and I can get s much better overall fit, whether tailored or fluid, in other knit top styles. I’m fine with them on others.

I wouldn't wear them as part of my wardrobe, although I do have to for work.
The problem I have with them is, as others have said, that they are often boxy and not shaped to fit, plus I have large boobs and the neckline/placket usually sits higher/less flat than it should! Child's friend's mum wears them all the time, but she is not as boob-y as me, and they fit so much better on her!

NOPE

I do classic but not prep.

Wish I'd had this mantra in middle school when I saved dearly for pieces of the "cool kids'" uniform.

[Forced into it as part of a uniform later in life, too....]

Not for me. I didn't wear them in the 80s or 70s. Or any other time.

I'm not a fan of polos because I have a poison eye for preppy. I do like what Bella found. I also like the pic of Ines de la Fressange--though, TBH, I would probably re-create Ines' outfit using a v-neck tee rather than a polo.

I found this article from Glamour that shows some different ways to style polos: https://www.glamour.com/story/.....polo-shirt.

I think that if you don't normally like polos, the key would be to get a polo that is a little less predictable, maybe with ruffled sleeves.

One of the pics I've attached shows a ribbed knit polo with a constrasting collar. It has quite a different vibe than the classic polo. I also like the idea of toughening a polo up with leather pieces.

My DH, bless his heart, is quite the classic dresser- khaki pants and polo style shirts are his workday mainstays. Most of his are performance fabric these days and he is fit enough for them to be flattering. I laughed so hard when he was wearing a blue one at Best Buy one day and a lady asked him for help!

Polos are definitely not my style though I’ve added a couple of collared knit tops for golf wear. But they are v necks without the button placket.

I know we aren’t supposed to say never but I’m pretty sure that’s when I will wear a polo!

Bella, you are the winner of the polo idea contest, lol. You gave me some great inspiration and now will be searching high and low for the perfect polo for me.

Not my style so it would be donated ASAP. If I had to wear one, I would hack off the sleeves and collar and try to find someone to use it for target practice to get it well distressed. Maybe tie dye it too.

I don't think so. Fine on DS, DH, and many of the models about though.

I have tried one on recently and decided no. My son wears one to school 3 days a week as his sports uniform, so it would be a bit off putting if I was to wear one too.

As the queen of preppie I have to admit I NEVER wear them. I just don't feel right in them. I like many of Bella's examples, but honestly they only look good to me if they are polo only in collar - fitted, cute sleeves, collar worn wide open... I think in the right fabric and cut they could be fine, but I have the same associations with them many people do - retail uniforms, golfers, men, school uniforms...I like the idea of Joy's customized version!

deb - I am completely obssessed! I've been looking at my go-to online retailers for the perfect one but no luck so far. I am sure your selection in the US will be far superior.

Not for me. I dislike the sturdy cotton of which they are made and anything with a collar bothers me.

Laughing at some of the comments here, but for me, no.
