Polka Dots on a Summer's Day - YouLookFab Forum

Hi Ladies,

Needing guidance on my summer wardrobe. I never enjoy the transition to the warmer weather as I'm a winter girl at heart and my preference is definitely for winter clothing ... So I would love your thoughts on this dress, which I am convinced looks better IRL than in a photo :(.

Cringing as I ask, but is it too "young looking"?

#1 is how I have worn it to work today.

I'm thinking some red beads might add a nice pop of color, however today went with a long black ball pendant and silver onyx ring.

# 2 is how I wore it on the weekend to a casual dinner at Church.

The dress is cotton and is so lovely and cool on a hot day that I almost don't care what it looks like ... But I do!

Your thoughts, suggestions very much appreciated.

I really like this on you; the black and white is your signature (and how great do you look posing in your modernist kitchen/dining area with the red kettle in the background?). And those accessories are beautiful!

I understand why it might feel a bit young; it is the empire style. While it doesn't LOOK young (the black and white helps with that) I know that when I wear that style it feels like baby doll pajamas. However, the waist surrender is excellent for a hot day, and this summer, why not keep your eye out for a similar dress in a different cut?

Deborah, it is not young on you and I, too, prefer it with the leggings. Would you like me to bring my red necklace over? It's a bit of a flight! But, I think your idea of a red necklace is excellent and I love the black, white and red combination. Great idea!

Agreeing with Suz about the empire waist (in combination with the cap sleeves, I think). But, I love the polka dots, and the black and white combo is certainly *you*.

Angie, thanks. I realise this is certainly not my 'best' look but it is so comfortable and cool and 'useful' on really hot days, so Im glad the dress didn't get 'marching orders' i.e. march right out of my closet lol

Suz, good thing I cleaned the kitchen last night lol. Can you tell I am a minimalist? Drives hubby crazy:) It think it is the empire line and the length of the dress that made me question. I do have another polka dot dress which if the weather stays warm may get a wear later in the week, if so will post to see what you think.

Sveta, the more I look a the pictures I think I prefer the dress with leggings too but when its really hot bare legs are just more comfortable.

JennyAnne, I do think the bare legs and heels create a slightly different feel to when worn with leggings.

Vicki, let me know your flight details:) Next time I will try with a red necklace and see how it looks...I think I was being a bit lazy and safe this morning.

Jonesy, you know even though I was abviously very aware of that fact that my wardrobe was very black heavy it wasn't until I started posting photos that I realised just how much black and white featured in my outfits... I do love it

Deborah, I love cool summer dresses! I feel the same way when I wear empire cuts. I love a capped sleeve, but the puffed ones make me feel like a schoolgirl!

I like it with and without leggings, but I much prefer it with the flats. A flat sandal would be nice too, for when it gets *really* hot.

I love your natural sophistication and I will be following your outfits closely this season. I have a hard time gettting the look I want when the weather heats up.

I don't see this dress as too young for you Deborah, it looks like a great summer frock. I prefer #2 with the leggings (looks sassier to me) but I do also like #1. When it's hot out, I think subbing in strappy sandals (either heeled or flat) will look great with this.
