Polar Vortex folks: best kids' jackets?

We're visiting the family in NY next week, and I just realized we have no warm jackets for the kids. They currently wear Patagonia down "sweaters", which is just fine for Northern California. But not for the polar vortex!

If you're surviving arctic temps this winter, what are your kids wearing and liking?

I was thinking about this 3-in-1 parka from Bean but wasn't sure about the warmth, though the web site says warm to -5 degrees.

That Bean jacket would be a great choice. I'm also a fan of Columbia 3-in-1 coats.

If this is a temporary need, though, what about layering a heavy outdoor fleece underneath your down sweaters? That might save you some money and aggravation from finding a winter coat at the last minute and would still be warm.

This is the Columbia fleece we like. I've noticed the thickness sometimes depends on the color you get, which is a little irritating, but DS wears his until it dips below 40 degrees. Between that and the Patagonia, you might be covered.

You also might try an REI outlet, which often carries amazing deals on kids' outerwear.

Land's End actually has great and indestructible kids jackets.

I prefer down jackets (and fleece-line snowbibs) for polar vortices (and all winter long in MN)

I get my kids' from LL Bean.

Exactly what Alaska Girl said. My experience was that kids don't get as cold as adults either.

ll bean or lands end. both are awesome!

the 3 tiered parka is great as they can pull it apart and wear each piece separately! raincoat, fleece, all works!

and they are all on sale now so go for it! just find a color (if you can) they like and jump on it!! I always buy one in the next size up for the net year when they are on sale. great buys and both wear and wash really well!! and are warm.

dd has skied NY (not to vail though) in them both and we have never had an issue.

My daughter runs warm, but she does really really well in the Land's End 3 in 1 type coats. Not even down, but super for her. Should be on sale now.

My kids wore the down ones from LLBean and Lands'End. You will need good coats for NY but if you are going upstate NY that is much colder than downstate, even in this freezing weather that has hit the East Coast.
Get the kids some waterproof and extra warm gloves as well.

I find that Bean and Land's End have great, very warm coats that seem to be rather accurate with temp ratings.

When my kids were younger, 7-9, they just didn't get the whole 3-in-1 jacket thing. So it was really hard for us to manage. If they thought that they were too hot a school on the playground , they would unzip and remove the polar fleece.

Lands End, and they are on clearance now. I just picked up next winters coats for $20 each.

The Columbia 3 in 1 jackets are great (LL Bean has great quality, too). And they are handy because the inside can be worn in the spring or fall, the outside can be worn in early winter (and is usually waterproof) and they can be worn together in the Polar Vortex. My kids love them and have never been cold in them. There are a lot of other, less well known brands doing similar styles now, too, though I don't know the quality of those.
