But gosh, LOOK AT THIS. Feeling inspired by Ginger and other seamstresses on this forum, I have been searching for the perfect coat pattern. If I ever were to sit down and sew an entire coat, it better be the ULTIMATE coat. Right?

Enter: The Poiret Cocoon Coat.

Wooow. To think one can own and wear something like this! And it is presumably on the easier side to sew. I am floored!

Fabulous - but better suited for taller ladies with flare and style .

Presumably from Poiret the French fashion designer from maybe early 20th century? Paul Poiret? I think I have info about him in one of my fashion books but forget the details.
That is quite the coat! Would it suit your “Natural” Kibbe type though? Looks a bit more Dramatic? Not that I am any sort of expert on Kibbe.

Its a beautiful coat and I think this style would work well on you because you have the height to carry it off. It would require quite a bit of fabric. I love it in brocade.

Gorgeous coat! I hope you take the risk and attempt to make it! I will admire you from afar!

On another thread, perhaps it might be nice to explore why height is not the only key factor that would make this coat wearable? I am fairly tall (5’9”) by most peoples standards, however, I cannot pull off this sort of silhouette.

Staysfit, I’d go so far as to say that height isn’t a factor at all—proportion is. Short women complain they “can’t” wear a midi skirt, and try to prove that by wearing one that’s 4” below their knees—midi for you and me, but not on a short-legged 5’ frame!

This is a historical pattern straight from the early 20th century, when Paul Poiret's designs were all the rage.
I do think that scale plays a big part in wearability.
It's a gorgeous design, and will look modern if done right. I have no need of coats in my current climate, so I will enjoy it on others. I can't wait to see how this turns out!

I've done a few folkwear patterns! They are great. I have Rosie the Riveter and the Romanian blouse. I did two pair of pants from the Rosie pattern. They are awesome and zip in the back which is flattering, and am about to start my second work shirt. And I scaled the blouse patter and did a matching one for my 3 year old.

I've seen that pattern. It does looks easy although i'm sure working with the fabric as shown is probably not for beginners. I recently did up a skirt in brocade and found I could only sew on the right side or I'd get pulls in the metallic threads from my needle, despite using a very fine needle. But in some other heavy fabric I'm sure it would be delightful. I could see maybe adding some hand embroidery to a wool version?

Oh, please do this! I do think it's best in a drapey fabric, so a stiff metallic brocade is not the best. Burnout velvet is one of the most comment materials I've seen recommended for the luxurious look.

Oh, I love this -- it's gorgeous. SO glam. You could do it in so many different types of fabric. I think it is a question of scale -- I'm short, and if it were scaled for my height I would absolutely wear it. After all, those flappers were not all tall. The popular song of that era went: "Five foot two, eyes of blue....has anybody seen my gal?"

Poiret was a wonderful Art Nouveau designer. I cant wait to see the finished piece when you make it. The costuming for the film “The Danish Girl” was inspired by Poiret, so it so fun to watch especially a scene where she wears a gorgeous blue velvet cloak.
