Pointers for hacking off denim pants

I have a pair of old flared-ish denim pants that I want to turn into flared crops. I bought a replacement pair, and I decided that I can now spare them. I want to give this flared crops look a try. Anyone tried this at home? Any pointers? Thanks!

Pin at different lengths with all proposed footwear. I also marked on my leg 2 and 4 inches above my ankle bone just to see how those lengths would look. I found that because my feet are low volume with correspondingly low ankles, I needed to go a bit shorter than others might.

I just hacked a pair yesterday. I turned mine inside out and measured the inseam of a pair that I already had and like the length of. Then I measured on the pair I was cutting and drew a line across using a ruler to keep it straight. Make sure that the hem lines up.
I pinned them on both sides of the cutting line to ensure that the fabric didn't move underneath when I started to cut.
I then washed mine so the denim would fray. When washed I trimmed the loose thread and they look pretty good.

I hacked a pair of jeans that I had, trying different lengths first and measuring and marking carefully. I also bought a cheap pair of crops in petite and took out the hems. I like the second pair best but plan to go back and make the first pair shorter yet.
