Podcast suggestions?

We've had such good book and TV discussions I thought podcasts would be a good topic! I was riveted by Serial and the semi-companion podcast, Undisclosed, about the Adnan Sayed case, and am re-listening to them now that he's been released from prison.

My favorite podcast ever, ever, ever is Dead Eyes, about an actor's quest to find out why Tom Hanks fired him from a small part in the 1990s miniseries Band of Brothers. Just great.

As you can see from those examples, I like serialized podcasts that tell one story in many installments. True crime or not... any suggestions? And what podcasts are you enjoying these days?

I haven't listened to many serialized podcasts. Maybe I'm missing out?? There was one I listened to a few years ago that I enjoyed because it was about a crime that took place in a city I lived in at the time. And there is no gore involved :). It's about the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum art heist....called Last Seen https://www.wbur.org/podcasts/.....season-one

I have never listened to any podcast. I probably never will. I don’t understand the draw. I actually turn the radio station if they are doing an interview lol I don’t like book on tape, either. *shrug*

I started listening to podcasts when my son got sick of NPR and we moved out of the country, so I had to find them online and listen through my headphones. Now that he’s at college, I can listen on a speaker, but I still like being able to hear a show when I want it, not when the radio station I tune my phone to plays it.

Used to love Snap Judgement, and the two of us listened to a lot of Radiolab. Oddly, as much as I liked catching Fresh Air when it was on the radio, I never got into podcasts of it. The only NPR show I listen to these days is Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me.

Wait a sec. Does Shankur Vidanthan’s show Hidden Brain count as NPR? That’s one I’m very into these days. Also Hubermann Lab, where an ophthalmologist/neurologist from Standford has an amazing wide range of topics related to the brain somehow. I’ve been trying to get into Stronger by Science, but the ratio of info to air time is pretty low. Cori Levkowith’s Redefining Strength shows were good for a while—they’re short & I really like info to write my own workouts much better than someone telling me what to do—but I’ve gotten sick of her style.

I realize none of these are the style you’re into, but hey, maybe I’ll listen to your kind and get into something new, or maybe you’ll do the same with mine

Chewyspaghetti, I never have the patience to listen to podcasts when I'm at home, but I love them when I'm taking long walks! It makes the time fly by!

I just started, so I'm no help to anyone else but happy for the suggestions. I figured out doing the dishes is much more palatable if I'm listening to a podcast or online talk.

Mary do you subscribe to Audible? There is a made-for-Audible podcast called "The Bering". 8 part true story about a fishing boat that sank in the Bering Strait off of Alaska, and the riveting US Coast Guard rescue. There is a song at the end of every episode, "Moonsmoke" by a band called Caamp. Because of the podcast, we fell in love with the band, and went to see them live last weekend!

Widely available, and continuing on the USCG theme, there is a podcast called "They Had To Go Out", a series of interviews with retired Coasties during which the subject is asked to tell their "most daring, dangerous, or epic sea story or stories"- from enlisted folks to retired Admirals. I believe these interviews are being archived for the new USCG Museum, in fact. I love listening to people tell their career stories. The women are particularly inspirational.

I like listening to The Moth Radio Hour podcast, and Story Corps - again, people's personal stories.

Finally - and am just going to toss this out there and run - my (other, non-USCG) son introduced me to the British podcast "My Dad Wrote a Porno" and it's been a lot of fun to listen to on long walks. Yes, I'm the crazy person literally bent over laughing in the middle of the sidewalk.

"Serial" was the first podcast I ever really got interested in, too!

Two of my favorites not yet mentioned:

Poetry Unbound. The host reads a poem, discusses it, and reads it again. I always get so much more out of it the second time. As a bonus, Irish accent. I could listen to him read a car manual. Each episode is around 12 minutes so it's not hard to time how to listen to them.

The Happiness Lab. The host is the Yale Professor who started a course she called the Psychology of Happiness and broke all attendance records for the university. Really helpful and easy to follow also.

Not a serial podcast, but I love Throughline. It’s from NPR, and tries to answer the question how did we get here, ie it looks at current issues and traces the history, policies, conflicts etc that lead us to where we are.

Sweet Bobby is an absolutely riveting podcast about an incredible catfish that’s a true story. I binged on all 6 ( I think ) episodes.

I often listen to books on tape while I drive to work and podcasts while I knit in the evening. I have listened to all the above mentioned podcasts as well. SF, nice choices!

Another podcast I have enjoyed and listen to regularly is called The Knowledge Project. It covers a wide range of business related topics. He’s a good interviewer and I think he selects great guests.

Sometimes I listen to Esther Perel, although it can be too closely related to my work.

I like to watch medical grand rounds on YouTube. During Covid closures many good hospitals posted them, they are still available and are often interesting. I also like to find museum vlogs about artwork and historical buildings.

Peri, I listen to Poetry Unbound, too, and the Slowdown. (Another poetry one). Not what Ms. Mary was looking for but someone else might enjoy! They are short, too. Poetry is very friendly to walks -- it is a rhythmic form, often written (in part) on walks.

I've appreciated these other suggestions. Funnily enough, judy, someone was just telling me about that Isabella Gardner museum heist the other day (and about the museum itself) -- now I am intrigued!

I love the idea of listening to Aussie podcasts. It's fun to get the different sounds of voices coming in.

Suz, the case is fascinating in so many ways. As is the museum and the woman who used to live there! She was quite the pioneer in her day and lived quite a life.

We listened to Smartless on our recent roadtripwith Jason Bates, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett. We really enjoyed it, and it made long days driving easier

I'm also a big fan of Malcolm Gladwell's Revisionist History podcast, and The Tim Ferriss Show.

I listen to several podcasts that I didn't previously mention because they are not the storied serialized kind you mentioned you were into. But just in case anyone else is interested: I tend to enjoy the ones that are like a conversation between two good friends on a relevant topic. I loved The High Low (current events with two women in their 30's) before it was no more. I also enjoy Older and Wider (two women in their 60's), Literary Friction (two book lovers), The Great Indoors (two interior designers). Also, The Wintering with the author Katherine May, and On Being with Krista Tippett, both of these are more interview based.

Thanks SF. I’m impressed that you’ve listened to so many—that daily habit must add up. I’ve realized recently that I’m not jumping straight into work on the computer when I wake up, and that I might could use that time to work through the backlog of podcasts. Your example might just be the nudge I needed. I’ve seen Esther Perel advertising master classes recently. She looks interesting, but I don’t know enough about her to want to lay that kind of money for her work. A free podcast, however….

I often listen to a podcast when I can't sleep! SF, your mention of Esther Perel made me remember how interesting her podcast Where Should We Begin was when I listened several years ago. Thanks for the reminder to revisit it.

I listen when I can't fall asleep, too, judy. but usually audiobooks vs. podcasts. But podcasts definitely have their charms and I wish I had time to listen to even more of them!

A side note: Malcolm Gladwell was a contemporary of mine at U of T, at the same college. He briefly dated a friend.

Anything by Wondery seems to be great ... I am currently listening to Something Was Wrong and it's fascinating. Africville Forever for history. Hidden Brain and Happiness Lab for inspiration. So many good ones!

A lot of my favourites have been mentioned already but I don’t think Heavyweight has been. It’s only on Spotify. Not serialized but individual episodes where the host helps people seek some degree of resolution on an episode from their past. Small or significant insights into humanity as a whole through individual story telling - similar to Ear Hustle for me.

Sometimes a good cooking video is just the right amount of soothing. I love Charlie the cook, especially his earliest videos, even though I’ve never made a single recipe of his. He’s on a diabetic-friendly kick right now. Maybe vegetarian will be next.

Speaking of Serial, I have funny memories around that show. It came out right around the time I gave birth to my son. So I would wake up in the middle of the night to breastfeed and listen to Serial! I would start listening, drift in and out of sleep, realize next night that I only remembered 1/4 of what I listened to the previous night, and go back to the beginning and the cycle would begin again, hahhaa: )

Also, if you have missed it, a judge recently vacated Syed's sentence, and now the family of the victim is appealing.
