I think of this as the Field of Dreams dressing style where if you dress a certain way, you will attract like minded people, people who might think you're approachable, creative, edgy, etc. I don't know that I think it works but if it did, here is a demystifying of Smart Casual that

Honestly I’m not sure how i feel about this. Not a supporter of Shein, but I kind of, sort of, maybe respect that at least they are trying to give smaller designers some piece of the pie, after years of just ripping them off. Yup, I’m conflicted. But I wanted to share this and wonder how others feel.

Vildy, I did enjoy the Guardian piece, because some version of smart casual works for me. Though I admit to a creeping anxiety as more do’s & don’ts were added. I know that’s part of the clever writing style that Jess uses and that I have always enjoyed except if I feel I could be in the crosshairs!

UNFRUMPED, I think all Jess is describing is similar to an instruction Jews have when praying in a synagogue that is the opposite to their family tradition, whether Sephardic or Ashkenazic. If they kept to their own traditions, there would be places where they would be the only voice making certain responses. People would be involuntarily distracted by you and looking at you. So.... Don't separate yourself from the community. IOW, choose not to startle people and make them wonder about you.

Hi Inge, an interesting story that horrified me. Good investigative reporting. The power of the reverse image Google search! I actually have met this "designer" once at Fashion Weekend briefly but happy to say I never spent any money on his clothing.

Second, I just read a fascinating article on "super fake" handbags on the NYT: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/0.....locked_art There is a Loewe bag I have looooong coveted; this made me wonder if I would buy the fake version? There are a lot of emotions connected with luxury handbags! I also highly recommend the novel Counterfeit by Kirstin Chen, which was based on the true story of a woman who bought the real items and then returned fakes.

Here's an in depth article about the change in return policies with some interesting stats on how many retailers are starting to charge for returns—and why.

"Many types of products or sizes of clothing are now available largely online, and unless you live in a major city, they might not be available near you at all. Some retailers have begun to characterize their charges for returns as a fee for the convenience of having everything delivered to your home. But as long as meaningful in-person alternatives continue to dwindle, shifting more of those costs to the buyer isn’t the price of convenience—if nothing else about buying online changes, it simply redistributes the burden of e-commerce’s shortcomings to the people who need to buy things online."
