I know that the nytimes is often behind a paywall, but I found this really interesting and very disheartening. In many ways it’s reminiscent of the issues we have in the US around organic food

Jaime, I was about to post a Carla Rockmore link ! I just recently “ found “ her also.
I don’t look anything like her, and none of her outfits would look the same on me, and she uses a huge wardrobe to get just the right look she’s going for, and her style is much more dramatic than I’d wear, BUT still, I seem to find nuggets of inspiration from the way she combines elements. Really good use of proportions. Makes me want to go rummage through my closet and try some things out.

Vildly, you find the most unusual things! I watched the whole video to find out how heavy the dress must be. She didn’t say, just that she was surprised it was heavy (!), that it’s “like, 10 pounds” and that she used 2652 pennies. I’m off to Google the weight of a penny….

ETA a penny is 2.5 grams, according to the mint. Her dress weighs 14.62 lbs!

I am resisting the siren call of everybody's links, because I like to save them up for a proper sit-down on Friday mornings. But I could not resist the penny dress. OMG Vildy, that penny dress! And now that I've found this YouTuber, I'm fighting the urge to take a deep dive into her video collection. (The fiberoptic dress video is murmuring words of enticement in mine ear).

I used to work for WDW entertainment, and some of the costumes I wore were about the weight of that penny dress. If the weight is distributed evenly, it isn't bad, but carrying the weight of the dress on two shoulder straps looks like a nightmare!

The blog on Lisa Pippus' website is still available. She hasn't posted anything new there in about two years, but her posts are timeless. I like to revisit them from time to time.

15 pounds is not that heavy for a costume, although all on two small straps sounds painful. When I was at Disneyland, the Electric Parade skirts for Cinderella's court were 40 pounds each. We had to make sure the waistbands were fastened as tightly as possible, or elsewhenthe ladies spun, the skirt would spin on their waist too.

They look like a dress, but it's two pieces. The top was a coset with the overskirt or peplum connected. The skirt had the hoops and all of the lights and battery pack- which was what made it so heavy.

Mary Beth - Great to know Lisa is on Instagram. (and totally with you, while working on the Link Love posts I constantly have to stop myself from 'browsing deeper' into a website or video archive:-))

Vildy - The penny dress is amazing.

And great points everyone about the importance of weight distribution in heavy garments. My neck and shoulders hurt just thinking about having all that weight rest only on two shoulder straps:-)

I had never heard of Lisa Pippus either but now I am mesmerised. Because from a quick look at her blog it seems she combines Zyla's colour theory (which I very much agree with) with personal brand archetypes loosely based on Jungean archetypes which I had never read about. I am going down a rabbit hole now and I can totally see how identifying the brand archetype(s) you want to project informs your personal style.

I have seen her do this for some of her followers and wondered how she does it. I tried to break down my own board but struggled. Maybe I am too close to it to be biased? I bet better analysis would come from someone else’s eyes.
