Please help with plaid shirt evaluation (final NAS decision)

Hello all!

I originally bought this plaid Treasure & Bond shirt online during NAS only to discover it ran quite large. When the small became available, I jumped on the chance to exchange it, but one of my frustrations with the shirt remains: the mismatched plaid.

I'm posting it here to see if I'm just too picky (is mismatched plaid a thing, and I just didn't know it?), or if you all agree that it doesn't make the most pleasing visual.

I've included my existing plaid shirts to give you a comparison. Hmm. I have a plaid collection, don't I? Maybe I should just stick with what I have. What do you think?

1) T&B shirt from NAS under evaluation
2) Mossino from Target teal & black shirt - broke Austerity August because this was the last in this size and I really liked it as an alternative -- I would like to change out the white buttons. Tags still on!
3) 7 or 8 year old English Rose turquoise & brown -- slightly more fitted than my current shirt choices but I still like it.
4) Patagonia warm flannel bought in Nova Scotia last year -- great in cold weather!
5) Merona/Target lightweight flannel in green. Maybe 2-3 years old. Holding up well considering it was a bargain.

Please ignore hair & lack of any styling or makeup. About to go for a run/walk and just threw these on with my cutoffs.

I love the T & B shirt but honestly you have other shirts in a similar colorway that look just as good. If it were adding a new color or cut I'd say keep but how many days are there to wear 5 plaid shirts, KWIM?

You do have quite a nice plaid collection and you wear it very well. Love #4!
The mismatched plaid would be a deal breaker for me. Learning to sew, I was taught to always match patterns.
What's up with Target matching patterns and Nordies not???

I know, JayS, right? Why can the $20 shirt match up and the $80 one doesn't? I like the fact that it has black and navy in it (my older plaid shirts don't have either of those dark neutrals that "ground" the colors so well to my eye), but I don't know if that's enough justification to keep it. There is a lot of plaid out there, and maybe if I'm going to go for another plaid item, it should be something other than a button-front shirt!

Mismatched plaid is a sign of poor workmanship. I would return it.

The (very) mismatched plaid is a dealbreaker for me. I like the plaid shirts you have much better.

The mismatching would drive me crazy! Much prefer the Target plaid shirt and will keep my eyes out for that one.

The Nordstrom site had the plaids matched up much more for this same shirt, sort of false advertising, yes?

I can see how the darker neutrals of 1 would make it different from your current collection, but the mismatching plaids would be a deal breaker for me.

I have the same issue with mismatching plaid or stripes- to me it's a sign of poor attention to detail on the maker's part (so funny that Target did a better job, although it could have been luck of the draw). That would be a deal breaker for me.

The mismatching is so extreme as to almost look intentional, but still it would drive me nuts. Tbh, I prefer the lighter colors on you anyway.

I thought the mismatched plaid could be intentional but that stock photo kind of puts me in doubt!

Plus I think you have better plaid shirts already :). I vote return.

OK, thank you! I'm glad to know it's not just me. I don't mind a little RATE, but it sounds like the mismatching is a deal-breaker for a lot of us. The T&B is going back, and I'm going to keep the Target shirt.

Well right out of the gate I love your plaid shirt collection. Blues are my thing! I have to be honest and say that the mismatch does bother me and seems like an error? None of the other shirts I have looked at do that. I wonder if you could reorder it and see if this one is flawed?

You've got some great plaid shirts, and you wear them so well!
I love the colors of the T&B shirt, but there's no way I would stand for the mismatched plaid. It's just shoddy.
I vote move on and enjoy the ones you have.

Glory, this is the second shirt I've seen, and they were both like this -- and considering the stock photo that Isis posted, I think this is just how they made the shirt, unfortunately. Perhaps it was deliberate, but if it was, I just don't get it.

Ah well, it's just another bit of credit back to the Nordstrom account, which is not a bad thing!

I don't mind mismatched, but I actually prefer the ones you have, especially the purple one! 5 is great too. I'd wear those ad libitum

These are the super-trendy plaids I'm seeing all over this season http://www.railsclothing.com/collections/plaids and I thought I'd look to see if the mismatch was a trend with them. Nope.

The mismatched plaids would be a deal-breaker for me as well, Janet. You know how to pick colors that work for you, so well, but until you have them in hand, it's hard to know. Something similar happened to me with a pair of Matisse booties, where one was completely different in its pattern and almost like I was wearing two different pairs of shoes. Fortunately, the second pair was perfect. Hopefully, you'll find a well-matched plaid down the road.

Glad you're giving it the heave-ho.
I assume it's more costly to match, and also to quality-control over final product. I wouldn't put it past some company to mis-match and declare victory over stuffy plaid-matching and hope to start a new trend. I'm sure I have a "conditioned" eye, but I like plaids and stripes matched. I have often "loved" a patterned item, sometimes as you see there, a not low-level item, where you assume they should be doing it better, and had to grit my teeth and pass over because of poor seam matching. Even if the color and fit were great, I knew it would bother me in the long run.
I suppose if it's really worth it, you could call a SA to contact someone IRL to look at some stock and see if there is one that is done right--if the size is available.

The mismatched plaid would also bug me I think. As I go to look at my own plaid shirts to see if they all match or I somehow missed it...

I'd return it . For $ 80!!!! Not matching? Nope . It should go back . I'd review the shirt online too to warn other potential buyers too ( what I did for some poor quality dresses from Belk recently). Have you looked at Eddie Bauer or Lands End yet ? Their shirts aren't as pricey as Nordies but probably higher than Target. I peeked over on their sites and some look like they might really speak to you.

Mismatched plaid is a deal breaker for me. Even on a thrifted shirt, much less an $80 shirt. Same with stripes and even placement of large patterns such as flowers.

I used to sew more than I do now, and that was one of my pleasures, making sure the patterns (plaid, stripe, etc) lined up.

Yes, Anna -- I'm more likely to give myself a small indulgence during an "austerity" month than a big one! It's really easy to, um, let a shirt end up in your cart when you're already spending $100 on necessities at Tarjay. I've carefully avoided stores where other temptations would be higher. No Nordstrom, etc.

Besides, I'd already bought a badly-needed new sports bra, so it's not like I'm taking AusAug tooooo seriously.

ETA: It occurred to me that using "girl math" I can justify the Target shirt during AusAug because the Nordstrom one is being returned, so I'm actually coming out ahead, money-wise.

You're on the right track Janet. Any little niggling feeling you have about a purchase from the outset will only grow larger with time. You've got some great plaid shirts. So sad about the Nordie's one though.

I would return it. To be honest, out of all the shirts you pictured here, it was my least favorite. The Target one was my favorite, ha ha!

Of course, maybe you could keep it and just button the buttons incorrectly so as to match up the plaid.

Seriously, I think you can do better, especially for $80.
