Playing with casual looks: skirt + tunic and a couple of dresses

I've had a lot of trouble putting together casual looks this summer. I'm no longer a fan of shorts (Bermuda or otherwise) or fitted tee shirts, and I don't own many casual summer dresses.

#1-4 - basic khaki skirt with various tunic tops
#5 - Lauren navy/white striped knit dress (my one option for super hot days!)
#6 - Tory Burch cotton tunic dress (an Ebay find with a fun print)

Opinions? Ideas? Thanks for looking....

I really like all of these, especially your collection of tops. I think these could be the solution to your summer dressing challenge. How about a denim skirt as another option to go with these tops?

Alicat, I don't have any white linen pants, but I do have some white jeans I can wear with these tops. Good suggestion.

I need some more flowy, loose sleeveless tops....and dresses.

Anyone have inspirations? How are you dressing for summer?

Hmm. What kind of bermudas have you been wearing and are now not liking? I could see most of these tops with slim-fitting bermudas or clams. I'm looking to add similar tops to my wardrobe to wear with the Gap Long and Leans I cut off recently.

I know that's not very helpful ... I'm sorry!

I've discovered printed cotton skirts (with a cotton lining). Cool and breezy. Last summer I always wore solid skirts (denim, khaki, white canvas) but I like a printed skirt with a solid top, I've found. I think you need more cool tops, too. Do you have any bohemian or peasant skirts?

I like the tops and dresses you show here, but am on the fence regarding tunics + skirt.

In pic 3, it is working for me. But in pics 1-2-4, something bother me in terms of proportions. The skirt is too wide and too short for the tunics' length, maybe.

Are you comfortable with tucking or belting?

I think a slimmer bottom, or alternatively nice linen pants would be nice (as recommended above).

I think these all work really well nancylee. Not everyone likes shorts/Bermudas so it's definitely finding what works for YOU. I like Claire's idea of more cool tops.

All of those outfits are so pretty! The khaki skirt is very becoming to you. And, goes good with your hair too. That gave me some ideas.

The tops are pretty and might feel less ordinary/frumpy with a slimmer skirt like this one.

I love both dresses. Have you thought about a colorful pair of sandals.i think wearing the white jeans is a great idea. Look at Nordstroms complete looks. They had some great ideas.

I like 3,4.5 and 6. The first top looks a little big and the second one seems a little long, especially with the straight cut hem.

Oooooh... I love those dresses you are wearing. I think they look amazing on you. You have a great figure, and it really shows in the Lauren stripey dress.

The skirt and tunic looks are all good casual looks and they appear comfortable as well but you are hiding some great assets with those volume on volume looks.

You do have a nice top collection, Nancy. I am not a fan of the khaki skirt (actually khaki anything), I would prefer a denim skirt or cotton skirt. I like the suggestions from ladies above. However it is just me - khaki feels not crisp enough for my style.

Thanks, everyone. I think I'm struggling with a couple of issues here. Summer dressing is a challenge in itself, and I'm also going through a style shift. I suddenly dislike shorts and structured looks for summer. I am craving softer looks and dresses rather than trying to match tops and bottoms. Without a jacket or scarf and other accessories, tops with bottoms just seem awkward and boring to me. The proportions seem tricky....I'm wondering if maybe I need some clams or capris. These tunics just look sort of boxy over shorts and pencil skirts. Maybe the longer tunics require a longer bottom?

I can see your point better now. Can you just save the tunic blouses to wear with slacks in cooler weather and go for the softer look of dresses if that's where your instincts are leading you? I think you can, and should!
