Planning a holiday capsule -Tips?

I may be a little over eager but I am really starting to look forward to our December summer holiday. Two weeks in one of the most beautiful parts of South Africa - a little coastal town called Sedgefield in the Western Cape. We may go on a few outings, and dinners out, especially since we are planning to be there over xmas, but mostly we are planning R&R at the holiday house and down to the beach and lagoon.

What are your best tips for planning a holiday wardrobe?

If you will be spending lots of time swimming, I suggest at least two swimsuits to change from day to day. Coordinating cover ups are also nice to have.

The other thing is to really think about what you will be doing and making sure you have outfits to cover those activities. And I always pack loungewear of some kind - leggings, t-shirt, sweatshirt - just comfy stuff that you can change into when you're between activities.

I've been to Sedgefield a few times, actually. It's really pretty. And close to Knysna. Even prettier.

Beach capsules. Casual capsules. And the odd smart casual outfit.

Two thoughts:

1. Begin with shoes, and make sure you have footwear for every activity
2. Limit your color palette to increase versatility.

I agree : go ground up. start with shoes first for the different activities you have planned.
I have also learned the hard way to try on every outfit prior to packing with shoes, handbag and accessories to help make the best decision. Also take photos so you can remember what goes with what. Hope this helps solve your problem a bit.

Sounds wonderful! I agree that making sure your swimwear and cover ups and beachwear is your best is the first step for this type of holiday. After that, you will do brilliantly with drapey tees and a skirt or clams or long shorts -- Angie's MOTG blog posts from (our) summer here will be super inspiration!

I often start with 7 tops and 4 bottoms that can be mixed and matched. Dress counts as top and bottom. That helps me narrow shoe selection and colour palette. Swimwear would be separate along with workout stuff.

Ooh sounds wonderful! Nearest I've been is Hermanus but you're evoking memories. Is this a place you go every year? Sounds like you can totally indulge your boho self.

The big question to me is--will you have ease of laundry while you're there? If so, you can keep it simple and use the same flowy pants and maxis as swimsuit cover-ups and as going-out clothes. If not, you'll probably want a couple of dedicated dressier outfits separate from your beach wear.

For vacation or travel I usually pick one neutral and make sure everything works with it, then I can mix and match easily if my arms are too chilly or legs are sunburned. A pareo is versatile. A wide-brimmed sunhat. Shoes for getting wet and sandy, shoes for cliff-top hikes or walking in town, and something a bit dressy but comfy --do you have metallic sandals, or espadrilles maybe?

Thanks for the tips ladies! They have given me some great ideas on where to start with my planning!

Our friends own a house in Sedgefield that we like to use - so we go there every year or two. Knysna is one of my favourite places in the world - I want to retire there!
