Plan Ahead or Grab And Go

I'm trying to figure out what works best for me and I was wondering what works best for everyone else. Do you plan your outfits ahead of time or do you grab whatever calls to you that morning out of your closet?

I plan ahead. I have my outfits hanging together, complete with underwear and accessories. I don't need to, I don't work outside the home, but I got into the habit a few years ago when I had to deal with very rushed, very early mornings (my brain does not wake up for an hour or so), and kind of liked it. I'm always free to swap things out or choose something entirely different if I want to, but I like being able to make the decisions when I'm in the mood for it, instead of in the morning, when I'm usually not.

I do both. I keep a list/photo album online of outfit ideas, but if I'm in the mood to wear a particular item that day then I just improvise. It is nice to have the planned outfits as fall back, for mornings when I am at a loss. But, to be useful the list has to include a variety of outfits to match the day's weather, work formality and walking requirements.

Like Jenava, I both plan and fly by the seat of my pants. I have my workwear capsule, so I can usually plan off of those, but on the weekends anything is game.

I usually plan ahead. I put my outfit aside on a separate bar in the closet before bedtime. Once in a while the weather is warmer or cooler than I expected and I end up swapping out a tried and true outfit instead. But for new outfit combinations I have to preplan so that I have time to assemble my new outfit.

I have a tendency to ignore a lot of my wardrobe and stick to the same ol' same ol' unless I plan in advance. Of course, those plans sometimes/frequently change. I exercise walk first thing in the morning, and that is sometimes when I alter plans from the night before if the weather turns out to be somewhat different from what was forecasted.

Similar to Jenava. Some days I plan and some days I don't. With a cohesive wardrobe I am finding the need less and less to plan ahead. However I have my catalogue of outfits if I'm lacking inspiration. I plan for special events and if I have a particularly early start I will sort my outfit the night before so as not to waste time in the morning.

I plan ahead, especially if there is going to be particularly strenuous that day - if I'm on call, for example, or if I'm on code team (ugh, I hate code team), I need something that I can run in and something I can bend over and do CPR or an intubation without flashing half the hospital (happened once, not fun).

Aside from that, if it's a surprise event, then I just roll with it I keep a black cardigan, pair of pumps, extra black tights, and a navy scarf in the car (just in case).

Depends on how much time I have - if I need to be out early then I plan ahead. Deciding on the day is luxurious when I have the time.

I do both - if I know I'm going to go somewhere special (to church usually counts), or be cramped for time in the morning (for which going to church also counts), then I plan ahead. The other days are a mix.

It absolutely depends on the day. I thought I had today's outfit all planned out last night...until I saw Angie's blog this morning. I was seized with inspiration and changed the whole thing up. Sometimes certain items appeal to me because of my mood. Or the weather. Or sometimes I'm just hell-bent on wearing a particular garment and will plan the best way to style it two days in advance.

When I'm a student (i.e. now) I grab and go if I have early class, and take my time coming up with a cool outfit in the morning if I don't have morning class. Sometimes I just throw on whatever I wore yesterday, and change when I come back during lunch

Last year I commuted really far to teach, so I'd be away from home for 10-11 hours at a time, during which time the temperature would fluctuate hugely and it might start pouring... my clothes had to be nice-looking, practical, and adjustable. I'd either plan the night before or wear one of my favorite outfits.

most days are grab and go...i try to dress for the weather, my mood, and the type of hair day i'm having. i like mixing things up. but i can say that some mornings i change a couple of times before i finally leave home.

but for days when i know that i'm going to have a lot of meetings, or days when i'm going to be meeting with SVP's, i plan in advance.

What Anne B said...it depends on the day. For a regular day, grab and go, but for more challenging days I will plan. And sometimes I join a YLF challenge so as to shake myself out of my grab and go uniform ruts!

I always plan ahead on work days, including jewelry and underthings and I usually put the outfit on the night before just to make sure it all works (unless it's a repeat that I know works); weekends it depends on how early I have to get out of the house - if my son has a sporting event at noon I know I can still sleep in and have time to get an outfit ready. If I have to be out the door at 9, I get the outfit ready the night before.

I hate to plan ahead, and will rarely actually stick to any plan I've made unless it's for an event (and even then...). I definitely grab-and-go, but on mornings that I am feeling particularly inspired I'll jot down outfit ideas that pop into mind for use on those days when I'm feeling particularly UNinspired. Works very nicely for me!

I'd say 50/50 now, but I never used to. I take that back, in high school I used to plan out what I was wearing as to not repeat too often, then I would draw pictures in a log of what I wore.
