Pixie hairstyling tips?

We're in potty training mode this week, so lots of sitting around at home. This morning, I decided to trim up my hair a bit more. I'm wondering what the other ladies who have or have had short hair do to style.

So far, I've only tried varying mixes of styling wax and shine serum rubbed into my wet hair after the shower.

Does anyone blow dry or use different products? I feel I need to use a product for some definition.

Also, how do you all feel about earrings and hair accessories? I know some like a big dangly earring with short hair, but I've tried it a bit and feel more comfortable with small studs or dainty hanging ones. I like adding headbands and barrettes to long hair, and I think that could work with the short hair, too, but is that too "90s?"

As for the hair - I tend not to do a whole lot with mine. Sometimes I wait until it is dry to apply product, which gives a different effect. And of course the different waxes and creams have a somewhat different effect as well. If your hair is fine you might need one that offers some stiffness.

With my long sideswept bang, I sometimes flat iron (esp. in the humidity).

I usually wear tiny stud earrings too. Occasionally will wear a statement earring.

I've never really liked hair accessories much so tend not to use them. Of course that could be because I don't know where to buy attractive and sophisticated ones; the barrettes around here look like they are intended for little girls only.

I think styling short hair depends a lot on the right products. I rub in about a nickle size amount of Paul Mitchell Super Clean Sculpting Gel when wet, then blow dry with a round brush, not too much styling or it can easily look "too fixed" (My hairdresser harped on that for years!) Then I use about a quarter size amount of KMS HairPlay, trying to mostly get it close to the roots to add lift, finally a light spray of Bed Head Masterpiece hairspray. Sounds like a lot of product, but you just use a bit and I don't find they weigh my hair down or make it feel icky.

I usually wait until my hair is nearly dry before applying any product. If I'm going for a more sleek look, I use The Body Shop Beeswax for my hair. It gives my hair incredible shine and smells fantastic - no stickiness at all. If I'm wanting a bit more "spike", then I use Garnier Fructisse styling wax. It allows me to work my hair into different shapes and has pretty good hold, but without any stiffness. I don't use any hair accessories at all and lately I haven't worn any earrings (other than small diamond studs for a fancy evening). I find my short hair + narrow face + glasses means earrings just feel like too much to me.

I wear a lot of big earrings with my short hair; but I have relatively subtle glasses!

I use styling wax usually; and will try something different once in awhile - a "bed head" type of solution! It makes it a little spiky, but kinda cool and softer.

My hair is fine and straight, and the cut is quite chunky. I wait until my hair is damp to entirely dry, then I use a simple leave-in conditioner for a soft effect and some direction, or a styling cream for more volume and obvious chunks and wisps. I can use a waxy pomade for a spiky look, but I don't really like the smell and stickiness, so I reserve that for very particular moods and occasions!

I wear dangle earrings once in a while (more often lately, actually), but my fallback position is brushed silver hoops (small or medium) or a variety of studs.

I dry mine then use a waxy pomade with super stick capability as I have very, very thick hair. Then a bit of spray. At home days I tend to air dry then run the pomade through if I leave the house as it spikes a little on it's own.

I did buy the goo from the salon as I need super strong stuff

I always wear a hoop, I personally don't like studs on me but I have a rather square jaw so they work, I think

your new look reminds me of annie lennox of the eurythmics. i have a bob...so no styling help. but if i get brave enough, i might do a pixie in the near future.

I use a leave-in moisturing condition that I comb in after blottng (not rubbing) the excess water out of my hair. Then I just comb it into place and when it's dry I just run a comb through it. I haven't got the hang of all the various waxes and pastes out there but am interested in seeing if I can spike it a little like Shannon's. Also, like Shannon I usually forgo wearing earrings of just wear my small diamond studes or lately my white stud earrings.

You trimmed your own hair? I thought you just got it cut?

I think styling products really depend on your hair texture, JennyAnne. My hair is pixie short, but it's naturally curly and fine. I have to use something heavy enough that it will keep frizziness away and define the curl, but not so heavy that it weighs my hair down and pulls the curl out. Right now I put some Pureology Anti-Breakage Twist in my hair while it's still damp (it's like a paste, but not a wax) and I scrunch my hair and let it dry a little while I put on my makeup. Then I use the blowdryer on low and scrunch some more until it's mostly dry. Then I let it air dry the rest of the way. Then if the ends of the curls are kind of fuzzy, I rub a little wax on the end to seal it.

I also prefer smaller earrings like studs, but it's fun to experiment with big chunky earrings, especially for special occasions.
