Pity party purchase; Update at end

So, having a bit or a lot of a pity party lately for a myriad of reasons.
I've been somewhat obsessed with tall sneaker boots since seeing these Rick Owens

A couple of sites had them on sale for a while, but I finally figured out that they'd be too small in the calf & above the knee and most of the sites were final sale. Similar sneaker boots by other designers also were extremely small, Some ~13".
I saw these crazy Chanel boots on designer finale clearance at the downtown Nordies. I saw them on the rack, fingered them, amazing leather. But I didn't try them on. They popped up in my head over the weekend.
They don't have the white sole of the Rick Owens, also not as sleek with ankle lacing & quilted knee pads. Logo is tiny. Sole is comfortable.
Sorry no pictures on me, as I'm at home helping Dad & he doesn't have a full length mirror. They come over my knee fully, & pad is right location on knee. I can't zip behind the knee, but as sales associate pointed out I wouldn't be able to sit easily if it did; doesn't look piratey
Trying to figure if this was a good impulse or not. Luckily it's Nordies, so I can return.

Have to say, I much prefer the Rick Owens. These look more like leather socks inside sneakers, rather than sneaker boots. And I don't get the knee pad idea, at all.

But that's just me... as they say, if you love them, go for it!

It's a totally different feel. Tough one. I think you could really work these, but it's a diff direction.

I think they are fun and the leather looks soft and luxurious but if they are not exactly what you want I would pass. Sometimes close enough is still too far away.

What's with all these boot openings being so small? I struggle with muscular calves.

I have done that sort of shopping too.

Sadly, on the other side, none are ever narrow enough for my toothpicks.

They look a bit odd to me, like Karl's trying to do health goth or something. I hate the idea of a zipper behind my knee joint and pity purchases never work out in my experience. Then again, I'm deeply curious about their styling potential.

If I were you, I'd take them home and play with them, take loads of photos for the rest of us to look at, and then take them back to Nordies afterwards.

Well, I'm oddly attracted to Karl's version of the look, as well as the Rick Owens boot. But then I love it when a designer finds a different way to interpret a boot--especially one doesn't involve just sticking more embellishments on a basic silhouette.

Sorry to hear about the pity parties. Life can certainly give us some low, teeth-gritting moments to soldier through. Hope you find yourself in an upswing before too long.

To my eye, the Rick Owens looks intentional. These look like I could put them together with a quick hack and some improvisation: My leather athletic shoes + pleather boot tops I made for my Xena costume + knee pads I could pick up from an athletic supply store. Sorry, but I think (know) you can do better. Also, an unzipped back zipper can catch on anything upholstered, so those boots will either hold you captive and/or wreck any chair in your wake.

I guess the lesson is to try on EVERYTHING that catches your eye, so that if/when they go on sale you can pounce if you're still interested.

Hope things look up for you as the year goes on.

I like all the details on them, and am wondering what you would wear with them ... sporty to go with the sneaker bit, a cape to go with the highwayman vibe ...?

I agree with approprio about pity party purchases. After the pity is gone, I never want to see that item again! Even so, I do like the boots in theory, but don't think they'd work out in practice for the reasons mentioned. Go find something else that makes you feel strong and fierce!

Hmm very different vibes between the two boots. The RO (sporty but not particularly hard edged) seem more in line with where your style is these days (which feels a little softer?), but these (vaguely sporty but a lot harder edged) could be fun paired with some of your softer pieces, especially big chunky knits. I think it's worth playing around with the pieces you're interested in pairing with them to see if the overall vibe still feels right.

Oh, I'm intrigued. I think they're cool. Different vibe from the RO, but that's not a bad thing. I'm getting a little bit of a gladiator vibe from these. I think playing with styling and seeing how they feel to you with your outfits will be the deciding factor.

I hear you about the tiny calves on tall boots lately. I used to only have the occasional problem with boots not zipping up, but I guess my calves have grown from running and cycling. Or they're just cutting things smaller. :-/

I like the Chanels more than the Rick Owens style because they remind me of polo players. And anything equestrian floats my boat.

I think they're crazy and cool. I'm getting an armor sort of vibe from them. Like urban/street armor, maybe? I'm super excited to see your styling ideas.

The zipper thing does worry me slightly though... Definitely make sure you can move/sit without it catching or being uncomfortable. (I think a back zipper is a really odd choice for a thigh high boot, regardless of whether or not you can zip it all the way.)

I've been drooling over the RO boots too. They would never fit over my calves. I don't really like the sneaker bottoms of the others, but the knee pads are interesting. The back zipper is sort of a dealbreaker for me.

These pique my curiosity. I'd have to see them on to get the total picture. Hard to tell if the juncture between the "shoe" portion and the shaft would work or create a line you would rather not see. I am always mindful of how "busy" shoes and accessories are, as the greater the details, sometimes I find the harder it is to have a cohesive outfit, if that makes any sense. The other boots read sleeker and more streamlined, with the white sole providing the munch. These are a lot more going on, at least in the box. Both have their appeal and potential to rise to your stylings.

Sorry that things are challenging and hope that there is relief in the offing.

So I finally got a chance to try them on again at home. I tried them with black leggings and my orange cropped sweater.
Yes, they are awesome, but I think they'd work best on a hip-hop dancer in a music video. Or someone very urban. Having Missy Elliott in my iTunes library does not make me fly.
So I will be returning them.
