Crazyone's post about her upcoming PhD defense, and the fairly high proportion of people chiming in to say what theirs were like, really struck me for the number of highly educated people we have on here.

It made me curious to know what attracts us here, or how we discovered YLF. I think I first heard of it through a board for graduate students, or possibly the sadly defunct Academichic. How did you come across it?

I might indeed have heard of YLF through Academichic as I followed that blog for quite a while.

Ha, I think I came here initially because I have few people in my IRL academic life who want to talk about fashion. =P (All of my shopping friends live in other parts of the country now.)

Not sure how I heard about YLF, maybe through Academichic or Already Pretty? (I miss Academichic too! Don't read AP nearly as much any more these days...)

I came here for the same reason as Diana. I was surfing around sites on over-50 fashion when I stumbled on YLF. Angie's advice seemed so practical and useful that I kept reading her blog which led me to the forum. I liked the tone of the forum so much that I finally joined up as a member.

Waaaaay back in the early 90s when the Internet was just a text-based way of searching databases around the globe, I kept thinking of how cool it was that I could actually share information with people I knew I'd never meet in person. To me, what Angie and Greg created in YLF turned that potential into a wonderful, concrete reality And, with the topic being fashion, one of my secret hobbies, I became totally smitten.

I came across YLF searching style-related questions, I think I was using Google then, now I use Bing. Just to keep the industry competitive.

I am not an academic but I do have a masters degree. I agree this is a highly educated forum and those without degrees are smart and articulate. I live in a community with a very low level of education. 41% of the US is college-educated, 48% in Canada. In my community, 9% are college educated. It's enjoyable to participate in this forum because I get a virtual community of like-minded, smart women.

I had just purchased my first few pairs of skinnies, and wasn't sure about the length to hem them to. After the poor tailor at Nordstrom finished her pinning, I decided I needed to do more research. I grabbed the jeans and went home, hopped onto the internet, and discovered PPL!

I found it by surfing for over-50 fashion/style blogs too. Most seem to be fairly blinkered but I felt the YLF forum was a lot more diverse & accepting.

It's funny - the reason I needed to find "something" was because I'd moved to a town where my social circle consists mainly of academics who have no interest in fashion/style whatsoever.

I can't remember how I found it. I think I read an article that quoted Angie and I decided to check out her site.

I'm sad I never got to see Academichic. That sounds like it was a pretty cool site.

I have always found it very interesting to...but it isn't just Ph.D. It is MDs, JDs, graphic design artists, artists, engineers. It is really amazing. And as someone else mentioned, it is not even the degrees. It is how well-read, thoughtful, interesting and diverse everyone on this blog is. Every one here is as at the top of their game ( even SAHMs, ok, I am one ! haha, a plug for me ) It is amazing. Really. Someone needs to study it as a social science experiment ! And we all love fashion !

I found YLF through an online mommy board...another mom recommended YLF. It also skews very highly educated--a lot of lawyers, doctors, engineers etc. there (even among those who are currently SAHMs). I love the thoughtfulness and analytical nature of the posts both here and on the mommy board, no matter if we are discussing the latest fashion trends or strollers or car seats.

I found it because my friend always says "YOU LOOK FABOO!" and I looked up "how to look fab" in google or something

I found YLF after googling "toe cleavage"--Angie had a blog post about it

Then I got to reading the rest of her blog posts, and really enjoyed them. And then I found the forum, and the rest was history

I think people who like to write full sentences tend to find each other on the internet. There's also analytic and introspective tendencies in common. So I guess it does not surprise me there are a lot of academics here although I am not one myself.

I found YLF about 6 years ago, after looking up a specific fashion topic on Google. I was in the middle of getting my PhD then, and I am half way my postdoc now. I can easily foresee staying with here throughout the next phase as well, whatever that might be. And I wholeheartedly agree, everyone here is amazing!

I laughed so hard at Jules' analysis...and then I realized that she might just be correct.

Though I never answered the question. I am a stay at home mom now, but 3.5 years ago ( after a major medical crisis..a near death ) , I was home recuperating and decided that it was time, since I had time , to tackle a thorny issue for me. In the preceding 5 years as a SAHM I had not transitioned well sartorially from my job in the big city and traveling. So I was just surfing the net looking for help and not really pleased. But after about 3 days of googling and following links, I found YLF. And almost immediately, it became a monogamous relationship , albeit, with dozens of women ! Hahaaa

(I don't have a PhD but I do have a terminal-level Masters, and a PhDing husband.)

I found YLF several years ago-2007(?), don't really know via what exactly, but I was smitten by an Angie's post about clothing alterations. At that time little or no picties were posted, and I remember how I wished to see all she is speaking about in some photos, too. I am so happy my dream soonly came true and found a really great comunity which I am greatfull for, too!:-)

I was googling personal branding and then wardrobe capsules.

But I'm a black sheep. I have done the least amount of school I can get away with. I experience school as confining, not liberating. My family is extremely educated, tho, and I've had a very classical education. No doubt that's part of the problem... lol.
