Hi - this news today about the Frick Park bridge collapse in Pittsburgh is really something. Any Pgh folks out there? Growing up there, and going back to visit often, I have walked, run, biked, and driven across that bridge and I have walked, and run under it, thousands of times. It's the kind of bridge that gives me vertigo when I look over the rail...

So fortunate there were only minor injuries. What a wake up call to the need for infrastructure repair in our cities, especially.

President Biden happened to be in Pittsburgh today, and was onsite.

Sorry for the years of construction and disruption ahead, both to the road and in the beautiful park.

Pittsburgher checking in. The bridge isn’t far from where I live, but fortunately, for me, mot part of my normal travels. It’s was scary to hear about it this morning. Fortunately the weather was bad this AM and the schools were on a 2 hour delay which probably reduced the traffic at the time of the accident. I’d like to say that I’m surprised that about what happened, but honestly there are bridge’s that I drive on everyday that I feel could come down at any time.

My son had heard about this, but didn’t tell me until I mentioned this post. Googling, i see it has been reported on by German news organizations.

I grew up about 2.5 hrs SW of Pittsburgh. The woods and hills in the photos look very familiar. What ironically good timing with Biden’s speech!

Fash…St Louis is the gate way to the west…I call Pittsburgh the gate way to the mid-west. As someone who is from the northeast east and who has family/friends in the mid- Atlantic its clear to me that Pittsburgh is not really either of those, but we aren’t really in the mid west either. And since Louis and Clark actually left from Pittsburgh, it’s just sort of my joke.

I read about that too and was shocked...and the timing with Biden's visit about the very issue too! Glad that injuries were minimal--it looked frightening.

So glad injuries were minimal. The West may start in Colorado. Definitely not Pennsylvania. I have always thought that the real Midwest …Nebraska, Kansas. Oklahoma, are seriously overlooked.

Kkards, thanks for explaining. I didn’t get the joke, obviously. Sorry! I think St Louis is also known as gateway to Midwest (at least Google says so) but as someone who grew up along the old National Road, I know how important those few routes over the Appalachians were and still are.

Fash…sorry to be Persnickety. St. Louis is in the Midwest but it’s nickname is the gateway to the west because historically that’s been recognized as where Lewis and Clark left from to map the western part of the United States. That’s why the arch was built

Sitting out here in California and wondering St Louis is called the gateway to the west? Really? Y’all know *we* (me and my dog) thunks (typo I’m leaving) that’s the south? Lol

Kkards, yep, you’re absolutely right, yet the Internet being what it is… take a Google gander & see what “gateway to Midwest” yields. Or not. If it’s an inside joke with yourself, then neither my opinion nor that of the rest of the web matters. I was just curious because I misplaced you in a past question about a certain region. Carry on.

Missed the interesting direction this conversation went last week! Growing up in Pittsburgh, I somehow thought I lived in the East. Having now lived in the Southeast, Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic, I am fully aware that I grew up on the edge of the midwest! Considering the distance we had to drive to get to any beach along the Atlantic Ocean, I should have had a clue!

I’m from the West and live in the West. I thought St Louis was called Gateway to the West because that was the jumping off point for pioneers in covered wagons.

Lol at the attempt to definitively define regions! As I’ve mentioned on here before, asking students to identify the region they are from or to divide the country up into regions is a very common exercise at the beginning of college-level geography course, followed by a discussion of the fact that there are many ways to define regions and although they overlap, the borders from one set of characteristic to another (say landforms vs commuter sheds) are never identical. Here’s a thing from National Geographic that explains. Note that even though they give one way of dividing the USA into regions, they are careful to point out that these are just one option, not definitive. https://www.nationalgeographic.....ia/region/
