Perfect jacket to wear to NYC in October

In October my husband and I will be taking our two children to NYC for their first time (they are 7 and 10). We have been before and I would like to look a tad dressier than my Lululemon zip up jacket

But I still have some mom shlepping, so I don't want something with fabric too delicate or stain prone. We plan to do a mix of indoor/outdoor activities (museums,parks, more casual restaurants). Typically I wear jeans.

I like Banana Republic, Tribal, Mexx. My upper half is about a size 4-6.

Could anyone recommend a suitable jacket?

What kind of a dresser are you? If you like BR I would say a classic trench coat. Looks great with denim and slacks or even over a dress.

PS What a fun trip! I can't wait to take mine to NYC for the first time (but I have a few years to go).

Check back in and let us know more about your style preferences (classic vs artsy or boho or RATE for example), color preferences, etc. You mentioned mostly casual activities and wearing jeans a lot, so I think a trench might work, but need more feedback to be really helpful

my style is probably more classic/sporty. I tend to favour shorter jackets if that is any help.

What about a moto? It could be in fabric rather than leather (though I think leather could be a great option for Oct in NYC). Maybe something other than black, like blush?

Well, it seems like at least one scarf will be in order for this trip!!! I love scarves, too!

My vote is for a fabric moto, something like what I'm putting below in the finds. I chose these because the lighter color makes an outfit look fresh, but you could do a colorblocked option or a solid darker color as well. These are just options anyway.

We'll see what other, wiser Fabbers have to say. Nice to meet you!!

PS since you have been to NYC I'm sure you know this but please don't forget the most comfortable walking shoes you can find.

You know, there are usually some great fall jackets at Nordstrom's Anniversary Sale. If you live near one, it would be worth going in and trying on some different styles, even just to see what you like. By the end of this month, I think you'll be seeing more choices in the stores.
What about a classic quilted style jacket, like this one?

eta: The idea I'm going for is something like this Burberry, collected below. I linked to the LLBean one, because I've seen past versions IRL and admired them--I like the plaid showing when you roll up the sleeve a turn or two.

You want something that is wind resistant yet you don't need a winter coat yet. For me, I would personally go for a nice leather jacket as October in New York City is perfect weather for leather jackets.

hmmm, this is a hard one because the weather in October can be hot, cold or anything in between. i'd look for an easy jacket that covers the tush, and is loose enough for layering. i like laura's idea of leather, but maybe with a backup plan in case of rain. its hard to give examples, since fall stuff hasn't hit the stores, yet (give it about a week)

I sport my leather jacket as often as I can in the fall, because it's ideal for cutting the wind on a cool day. It's also helpful to have a wet weather friendly piece, a trench or something rain repellent because when it does rain in the city it can be very messy. And scarves are a must in the fall. They do a great job to add some detail to an outfit while keeping the ol' neck warm.

TBH I think your Lululemon zip-up is probably fine! Why not shop in NYC? Tons of shopping in NYC!

You should check out all the sporty luxe posts and see where your style and it might intersect, jacket-wise. Sort of akin to Firecracker's post, you might try a slightlly fitted super-thin down jacket, or a moto with jeans and great sneakers.
For another practical upgrade, knit blazers are a good way to go--they are more comfortable, and washable, than typical blazers. Might not be very warm if October is ahead of schedule, but some are lined with knit as well, and you can layer with light wool sweater, and underlayer with that.
The trench idea can be interpreted with a short trench--can be quite sporty.

It will really depend on when in October you go. Early October can be more summery and late October chilly. A moto is a good option or a short trench with removable lining perhaps. And as you probably already know, New York is all about black
