Pencil skirts and skirt tops

Today Ana, Sarah and I went to jcrew. I'm sure we'll start a thread on it but I had a question about pencil skirts and skirt tops to go with them. As a rectangle, I like pencil skirts but I've been having trouble with tops to go with them. Mostly I've been wearing fitted knit tops, tucked in or belted because I look too rectangular with them not tucked in or no belt. But even with these tops tucked in it seems kind of blah to me. Then today I tried on this top tucked in with a pencil skirt

and a light kind of went off. Should I be going with more voluminous tops to tuck into my pencil skirts? What is the correct silhouette for me for pencil skirts?

PS Ana said she liked this top on me but I decided to think on it because it is really outside of my box style wise.

To add to my original question-- maybe a pencil skirt just needs a top with a more interesting detail?

Patience I think that you're onto something, a voluminous top with a pencil skirt sounds great to me. I can never wear anything tucked in, but I can see you pull it off. Maybe you can take a picture and let us see?

Yes! You're after a more blouson effect on top, Patience. I do the same with my rather straight hourglass figure.

Really? I thought rectangular shapes needed more definition in the waist area? Or is it the blousy top with a belt and pencil skirt that gives the definition? I have sooo much to learn! Would one of you care to show a pic of the look or pieces of clothing that the finished outfit would look like? I'm not envisioning it.

This looked great on Patience because the blousiness and tucking emphasized her waist. Patience, I love how you wear knit tops with skirts, because it always looks chic, but I think the blousy, tucked-in look is nice on you, too. You could even wear a belt with it.

Sounds like a cool combo Patience! Please post a photo! I am still wearing fitted tops with my pencil skirts, I am not so sure about blousy ones on me.
