Hey, after about a month of lurking I joined JUST so I could weigh in on this issue!
Pearls are a definite YAY, I think, but as others have commented, you need to find the right ones and the right way to wear them. I hadn't trotted any of mine out for a while, but Angie has inspired me. I have a choker with a triple strand of largish, white, freshwater pearls that I love, but didn't wear too often. Now, with Angie's help, they're getting out to play much more. The other day I wore them with a black sheath dress and a cropped denim jacket with the collar popped and felt more fab than I'd felt in a long time!! The secret for me is to add the RATE touch (if I'm using the term correctly?) to balance their ladylike vibe so they don't cross over into prissy territory. Like Angie does! That's why some smaller, more conservative pearls I own probably still won't see much action.
Today, also very inspired by Angie and a forum member's picture I saw yesterday, I'm wearing a long grey pearl strand knotted, mixed with silver chains, over a graphic tee and jeans. I'm loving this new approach to making pearls rock!
