Pearl Necklace but what Earrings?

Hi Ladies,

Loving all the pearls and am keen to play:)

I bought the pendant I showed you in #1 and hope to wear it tomorrow! BUT, I am an earring wearer...always...and I'm not sure what
to team with this or my other pearl necklaces see #2 - #6

I have noted some Fabbers wear no earrings and others very small studs (not necessarily pears).

With my shorter hair I tend to like a larger earring and more often than not it's a drop style, but is that too much with a chunky pearl necklace?

I've added some pics of my pearl drops and also my collection of stud style earrings. I did see a very small sized little drop pearl earring yesterday that looks like #11. It's small but just "dresses" the ear. Would that work.

Would so love your advice as I'm pretty sure this is one of the reasons I haven't worn pearls in ages! The 80s were great because you could go big on both!!

Hah Deborah I am an 80s gal, because I would definitely go big with both. I'd wear a big crystal rock type stud, like these below, or my giant hoops; I might also consider other textured metal droplet styles. I wear earrings every day too (though I took a little break this week). Are the earrings in #10 yours? From those I think any of the big metal balls, or even the gray pearlized balls, would be fun; the spikes and two squared metal pairs at the bottom would also work well. With the necklace in #4 you could go with either of the black/charcoal balls.

Aida thank you! Yes the collection in #10 are mine. Good advice, I thought maybe mixing a modern metal look with the pearls might work. Will have a play x

I have the opposite approach from Aida - surprise, surprise. With pearls, I vote a completely different earring, if any. As in a diamond stud, a gold stud or a silver stud. I think anything else competes - unless you are Aida and can rock that look. It suits her style of dressing. Today, with my big pearl blobby necklace, and because i was already wearing a fairly noticeable ring, I didn't wear any earrings at all. I follow that "rule" : only one big and noticeable thing, and no more than three things on at a time , choosing from a watch, glasses, ring, earrings, neckpiece. Matching pearl earrings to a pearl necklace looks really dated to me. Again, unless you are Aida and wearing some crazy big statement stuff

Ah I wouldn't match a pearl earring either, just meant that I'd likely go for something BIG -- metal or sparkly in my case -- BUT if going with pearl-on-pearl then I think having different colored pearls would be the way to go. I certainly do like my big statement stuff ^^

I am not much of an earrings wearer but I like the idea of mixing something metallic and sparkly with the pearls.

Oh your pearls are so cool. I don't wear pearl on pearl but I always wear earrings, usually studs. With the first necklace I would try the big black studs or the big silver studs. I think the chunky style will compliment the pendant without being matchy matchy. But I think you need to play with your beautiful jewelry collection and the outfit you will be wearing to get the right balance.

I think you could wear a big earring with your new necklace. With me I always go minimal/none on either earrings or necklace because my glasses are such a statement.

I agree with those who said not to wear pearl earrings with a pearl necklace. I have tried, and I even have a close match to your #11. I am happy wearing earrings in the metal that my pearl is set in.

So I would try big earrings either in black (neck cord) or silver or both. I would try for the silver to be rough hewn the way it is in your necklace--not an exact match, but not shiny or regular or symmetrical either.

Diamond or crystal studs would work too, though not sure that is your style.

I like the earrings in #9. If you want to match pearl with pearl (which I do sometimes) I'd recommend simple pearl studs. Often, I wear gold & diamond studs with pearl necklaces. And when I do wear pearl drop style larger earrings, I pair them with a pearl bracelet - not necklace.

I typically don't match and could go either way. I like diamonds or something small and sparkly if going the stud route. If going large anything goes. Maybe try mixing in another stone? I like opals with pearls, turquoise is also nice, but anything could work.

I'm still learning from all you Fabbers (esp. Deborah, Aida, and so many more), but I notice that while clothes are more matchy, the trend in jewelry remains eclectic. Therefore, I agree with those who suggest picking up the silver metal or black strand somehow--the darker pearl choice (echoing both the pearl and the black) might be genius, as is clearly silver studs. I saw this visual from Silpada, where bigger-but-airy drop hoops looked great (see p. 19). I do think experimenting will tell the tale. Do share pics with us so that we can continue to learn from you! Great question, esp. when the necklace is ALL pearl and nothing else!

pps--and I'd give #7 (which i LOVE--are those still available anywhere?) and #8 a try, since they "relate" but are not perfect matches. Who knows?

In general, I'm not a fan of both earrings and necklace playing a major role. The more of a statement the necklace is, the more I like the earrings to sing backup, and vice versa.

My personal preference is for one of the following:

1.) Statement necklace and tiny studs just to fill the piercings so they look less naked.

2.) Statement earrings and no necklace whatsoever.

I think 7 or 11 would work. I always wear earrings...and sometimes I match my pearls, sometimes not. I wear diamond studs with my chunky pearl necklace, peal studs with my classic strands. I have a multicolor baroque strand that I wear a small gold huggie with, I have a chunky gray strand that I wear a gray crystal earring with. So I think you can mix it up.

Not a fan of matching earrings and necklace. I would wear something silver and shiny...with my collection that would be stick type earrings or hoops.

I'm another fan of not being too matchy with necklace and earrings. I tend to go more discreet with my usual diamond studs if I'm wearing a more eye-catching necklace, especially if it's a shorter necklace that falls closer to my face. I might go a little more statement-y with earrings if I'm wearing a long but delicate pendant style. But these days I tend to keep my earrings on the smaller, more delicate side no matter what. I'm not sure why, because I used to wear long, dangly, and bold earrings all the time, but I'm not feeling that look for myself these days. Perhaps because I wear my glasses more frequently and feel like it's just too much with glasses + bold earrings.

Even though I probably would not put pearl earrings with a pearl necklace, I did wear a pearl ring with the pearl necklace yesterday -- somehow the pieces being further apart visually helps them tie together without looking too matchy for my eye.

You wear simple and striking so well Deborah, the contrast between your hair, lipstick, black jersey and modernist silver jewellery is your style signature. I think you have all the things in place to carry off a large silver ball earring or a modern pearl drop earring too.

I think the black pearl earrings would be fun. Matchy but not matchy. Or the silver balls, or the drop earrings in photo 7. Even though I'm not generally a matchy earrings fan, those drop earrings might be just fab.

Yeah 80s! I always wear drop earrings. Always. It is a rule. I rarely wear necklaces anymore because they bother my neck but when I did I would wear necklaces and earrings. Big necklaces, little necklaces, in between necklaces and drop earrings. And then bracelets. I no longer wear more than one ring.
I am not a fan of matchy matchy but I like my jewellery to tell a story. To flow together. IMHO one pearl piece is enough. Sort of like how I do amber. I wear one amber piece. But then I break rules all the time.

I would wear earrings with black in them with that piece. Not sure which ones. I also like the idea of drop earrings with that necklace.
