What you say makes a lot of sense to me. I feel the same way you do about dressing my figure, i.e. elongating my upper torso. From your pictures, though, I don't see a need to do that.
I believe I have an hourglass figure with pear tendencies too. I also have narrow, sloping shoulders. However, there are some interesting differences between our figures. When I look in the mirror, I see a shape something like this lady's (8-shape):

See how her hips come out right beneath her waist, leaving very little space between hips and bust? She and I have very little room there to wear things like wide belts and high waisted pants.
When I look at your pictures, I see something more like this lady's (X-shape):

There's a nice side-by-side comparison there too.
While I find Angie's basic body types VERY helpful, learning about these particular variations within them helped me even more. I can't rely on the hourglass or pear recommendations, without modifying them for my hip placement. It may be helpful to you, too, to think about this as you experiment with new clothes!
