I'm going to make this dress:

Except with a turquoise tank (I can't find any ivory tanks right now and white is just not good on me). I've got some pretty perfect fabric - pink and yellow "wheels" (made of little dots) on a fuschia background. Unfortunately, I don't have quite enough and I was thinking of making the skirt out of 3-4" squares of that fabric alternated with a turquoise fabric (yet to be determined). Is patchwork too "country" to work for this type of dress? Is it too young? What do you girls think?

Nice dres!! (Anthro, right?) I think patchwork is all about the way it is done. It can look quite country but it can also look very modern. Maybe play around with some different fabrice placements and see what looks right.

I am a lover of patchwork, but I read an article in a style magazine putting patchwork clothes down. I don't know if I agree with that 100% but I thought I'd share what I read. I still think there can be a patchwork garment that passes the test, but I think it would have to be very modern and unique. What do you think of using virticle lines that are not necessarily straight, the skirt would have a verticle wavey effect?
Are you going to use a pre made tank top? Great idea!

Ooh, I think I really like the wonky patchwork idea! Good call. The fuschia fabric is actually very modern and geometric, so I think that would pair well.

I wish I could take credit for the idea (well, the purchased tank part, the patchwork is all me) but there's a tutorial up on a blog on how to make this dress.

I'm sorry but I think I will have to disagree here. I think patchwork is for sleeping under...not wearing. Are you a long way short of having enough of the print fabric? Could you make the dress shorter and use as a tunic with leggings? Or perhaps make the middle contrast band wider? You may also find that if you patched the skirt, all the seams would affect the drape or fall of the skirt (possibly making it stick out in a funny way.) Just my 2 cents worth of course....have fun planning your dress. I love the planning stage of any project!

The skirt looks rather fitted. Patchwork seams would add a lot of bulk to it- I'm not sure if that's a good idea.

Yeah, that's a good point. I hadn't thought of the added bulk. It probably won't work for this particular dress. I think I'll find something else for the skirt of this and save the fuschia back to make a patchwork skirt as another project - I know a fuller skirt would work since I've made one for the Princess. (I'm only about 2" short on the fuschia, unfortunately, I'm short in the width - I'd need almost another yard to make it work).
