I have just heard from a friend whose daughter and son in law lost their home. Fortunatelyl they are safe.

Thinking of Ms. Mary and Jenn and others of you in the LA area.

Deb, it’s nice to see you! I’ve been following this really closely. Two of my photographer acquaintances have lost their homes, and another one has been evacuated.

The scope of these fires is just devastating. I’m sending all the love and strength to our friends and loved ones in the area. Please check in when you can!

If I read one more article about feckless Californians moving into wilderness interface zones, I will scream. The Thomas fire in SoCal that gutted my hometown a few years ago took out neighborhoods that had never burned. The fires in Sonoma did the same. The dry years are hotter and dryer for longer than they used to be, and as a result the fires are worse. Please support efforts to address climate change.

Just seeing this! We are on vacation in Mexico and safe, if horrified. We had minor wind damage and temporary power outage at our house but otherwise it's fine. Heartbreaking ly, several of our friends ha e lost their houses and one couple is staying at our house right now. It's all just unimaginable. Thank you all so much for your concern.

Tragic fires. Looks like Mr. M's childhood home in Altadena is gone--his family lived there when we married. We lived in LA for the first 12 years of our married lives. Hollywood, the beach communities--so many memories. The scope of the tragedies and the losses will take days or weeks to be known in full. My heart goes out to those who lost everything.

I hope everyone in YLF is safe.

Thanks for your concern. I'm in an area that's safe from both fires, but I don't think there's a person in LA who doesn't know someone who was impacted. The scale is enormous.

Surprise! As far as we can tell from photos and descriptions, the house is still there. The wind blew the fire away from it.

Little if any rain, California has a long fire season ahead. Thanks for the link, Mary.

Glad to hear that fellow Californian Fabbers are ok! DH and I are very fortunate that our house and immediate neighborhood are fine, though we had to evacuate quickly that night. We live in Pasadena, just south of Altadena. Stayed five nights in a motel.

The extent of the damage, especially to the middle- and working-class neighborhoods of Altadena, is devastating. Also, our nearby synagogue was destroyed.

I’d like to add another worthy cause, the Pasadena Humane Society, which is housing many displaced pets.

Thanks my friends - we are indeed ok. Just a bit edgy and highly attuned to the slightest whiff of smoke or distant fire engine siren. But our area is quiet and the sky is beautifully blue.
