Hi all!

I’m not terribly active on the forum these days as we are traveling, but we are entering our final week of vacation and decided to spend that time in Paris for my birthday!

We haven’t been to Paris in 14 years, and we will have plenty of time to see the sights, wander, eat and drink, and yes, shop. Any suggestions for areas or stores for good shopping (not just big names that you can find in NYC)?

Janet no suggestions for you I'm afraid, but just have to comment on that stunning photo ... You look like a movie star in the 50s casual posing against a picture-perfect vintage movie set ... Almost too beautiful to be real! Enjoy every moment xx

Wow, what a view! I like poking around the smaller stores near the Rue de Sèvres. One of the shopping guides can give you more details.

Travelling with two teenage girls, shopping was very much part of our experience! Everything from global chain stores to overpriced "curated thrifting" in the Louvre shopping mall to flea market finds. My personal favourites were the flea markets, both specific fleas and the many vendors of new clothing and accessories to be found at the weekly farmer's markets around the city. Most of my purchases were new accessories from farmer's markets - good quality wool (scarf, beret) and leather purse at good prices.
In terms of vintage markets, we attended both Porte de Vanves and St Ouen. The former was like an extended garage sale with every grandma's old cutlery, tableware, silk scarves, etc, and made for a pleasant Saturday morning. The latter is absolutely a destination, it's huge and we didn't begin to have time to cover it but saw so many interesting things even aside from the stalls (like preparations for a pop-up meal in an art gallery with stunning tablescape...). There's an entire area for vinyl records which you might appreciate! But also everything else from stunning antiques to knock off sneakers. We bought very little here (some vintage postcards), it was more of an experience. My daughter's new fantasy life is being a vintage clothing vendor at this market.

Will also mention La Samaritaine - was not on my radar as I don't think it was open when I was last in Paris but we just happened upon it. Didn't have time to explore the whole place but we liked the curated main floor selection of gifty/souvenir items.

No shopping advice but you rekindled happy memories with your photo of the Eiger. You were lucky to see it on such a clear day.

No advice for shopping in Paris (it's been over 20 years since I've been there) but have a fabulous time!

I love Comptoir des Cottoniers for women's clothing. Also my husband is a huge fan of the fun printed button-down shirts from Coton Doux. And of course you must do a turn through Galeries Lafayette.

Go to Le Marais! Our favourite area in Paris. Lots of cute shops. Have a ball!

As for Paris weren’t you interested in a dress from Sezane at one point? Maybe worth visiting the store right there in Paris.

No advice but am a bit excited to see what you find. And that pic is fantastic, the mountain is so impressive, your smiling face, and the red flowers make for a better than usual selfie!

Here we are yesterday at Jungfraujoch, on and then in a glacier! We hiked almost 20km down the mountain from a point below this one. It was a blast!

I did my study abroad there. Not a lot of disposable income at the time, but I do remember they have a large, well-known flea market. If I had money, I might spend it on things Paris is known for: Limoges dishware, perfumeries, and wine. I hear Paris drinks a lot of Loire wine, which is lesser known around the world, so it would be an adventure to talk to a wine seller.

Thanks again for all the great suggestions! I’m on my phone as usual so hard to respond individually but I now have several open tabs on my phone for good shopping reference.

We will be in Paris later today. Stopped for an afternoon/night in the lovely wine town of Beaune. This has indeed been a magical trip, and I am pinching myself every day!

Pic 1 is for Carol — our wine last night was fab! A splurge bottle Corton Clos du Roi grand cru 2018. While in Côte d’Or…

Pic 2 last night — meet Nino! I will take any chance I get to say hi to a pug, and this little charmer stole my heart.

Pic 3 is the lobby of our hotel in Beaune — it was an abbey for Cistercian monks dating back to the 14th century

Pic 4 is a silly snap of my shoes on the restaurant floor of the Lebanese restaurant where we had dinner the night before during our one night in Geneva.

I was in the Marais for a few days last week, on the way to a conference in Lyon, but jet lag kept me from getting the most of it. I stopped into a few chain stores that aren’t found near me (Arket, COS) and found a few great things but I wish I’d made it to somewhere more Paris-specific! My plan was to go to the main Galleries Lafayette but jet lag won out. I did have a great time seeing modern art at the Centre Pompidou, though, and had dinner with an old friend, so my two days weren’t a total loss.

Agree on the Marais. Lots of unique jewelry and clothing boutiques. The jewelry spans a range of price points, with interesting designers. St Germain has an amazing pharmacy, full of well priced French skin care (right off the Blvd behind the Madison hotel) and the rue Cherche Midi is nearby with several great boutiques and leather bag options, including some local to Paris. Groom (oops- closed for August- double check as much of Paris, including restaurants take the month off), Loxwood. Enjoy!
