I even take along a small packable duffle bag on every trip -- it comes in handy for so many things during the course of my travels (carrying dirty laundry, an overnight bag for a stop in one location so a whole big bag doesn't need to be lugged from the car, etc), and can be a godsend if a check-in bag is stuffed beyond the limits for the trip home!
We always bring back things for our home, presents for others, and groceries from our trip! That won't fit into a carry on. The reason we have fun things from around the world in our home is because of checked bags!
