Oh, Lyn --- Mochi's SO right about the competitiveness of many Asian cultures, and coming from a different one, I suspect also that the older generations from this part of the world are far more leery of bestowing approval than is usual in the Western cultures. It is almost as though they *must* give us something to strive for, some avenue for self-improvement --- or they'd fail in their duty as parents to help us be 'better'.
That said, objectively speaking, you do NOT have a beer belly, or *any* untoward belly-age either. And I absolutely second Gaylene's son's strategy --- polite but firm drawing of lines.
