Pardon me but what is a satchel?

Is it the oxford style satchel or are there any other bags that constitute satchel?

these are all examples of the satchel, which usually have shorter handles and can be be many shapes and sizes.

I think of English schoolboys and Indiana Jones, a flat rectanglar bag, with a front flap and long strap which is often worn crossbody.

I wonder if it is used differently in different places. I thought what TraceyLiz did -- that a satchel was a more structured bag that can be worn on the arm (but often has a shoulder strap as well).

I think the term may have developed a different meaning in the UK over time. On handbag websites in the UK the wider term would be a grab handbag http://www.houseoffraser.co.uk.....rab%20Bags

I love this type of thread becase I have been assuming one thing when a form member has mentioned their satchel and they have proabably meant something worlds apart.

I too am quite puzzled Jules.

For me a satchel is what you initially linked to. I remember when my son explained to me what a satchel is - because the character from the cartoon he loved watching always carries a satchel

From the Cambridge dictionary:

Satchel - a rectangular leather bag with a long strap, used especially in the past by children for carrying books to school
