Pants changing again?

Oh, today I put on jeans for the first time in about two months, as it was cool and I was going to be outside for the morning. They are high waisted, wider legs, semi-cropped length, hard denim from Old Navy, and rather snug around the waist and hips though only uncomfortable since I’ve been wearing shorts so much.

Well, what to my wondering eyes does appear but an article about the women’s trend to wear loose-fitting, even sagging, low-rise pants with exposed boxer shorts at the waist!

Has anyone seen this in real life, on the street or perhaps on a campus? I can’t object to looser. But my main concern is being subjected to another wardrobe renewal… of course, I know it’s not a requirement, but… will it ever end? Just kidding…

The fashion weeks (S/S 2024) have started, and the street style reporters from Copenhagen have identified exposed underwear - the old oversized bottoms over boxer look that I remember being big with boys (but not so much girls) several years ago. Ugh! What’s next? Whale tails?

Having never been a fan of low rise anything, I’ll happily stick with high rises and looser straight legs. Having rebuilt my jeans collection this year, I’ll stick with what I’ve got through the next evolutions for jeans.

cjh, it’s still hot where I live, so I’m mostly seeing medium colour faded cut-offs on youngun’s, skinny jeans and relaxed straight legs - cropped or rolled - with ankles exposed on 30 years and up. I just don’t see the full length, wide leg jeans trend. When it’s nice weather - it’s too hot for most jeans, and when it’s colder - it’s usually too sloppy (snow) for those kind of jeans. I’ve tried on a pair of full length wide leg white jeans at a local store twice. They look fabulous, but I can’t figure out a single opportunity for wearing them, so I haven’t pulled the trigger.

Oh Boy it figures, first they try to get everyone into the gut squishing high waists and now they’ve decided its time to do the opposite,
Well I guess my stomach would appreciate more room around the waistline, but I’m not a fan of the low-rise either. I like mid-rise, that’s my sweet spot for jeans, I sure hope they continue to make those available too.

Let the kids have at it , I say . I personally find lower rises SO much more comfortable but not low to the extent you mention .

As to Carla’s point about who is wearing high waisted wide legs - the only people I see wearing them are very young women and teens .

True to late ‘90s fashion, low rises are coming through, but aren’t yet mainstream. They are achieved by wearing bottoms with low rises, or by wearing slouchy higher rises with waistbands that rest on the hip bone. High and very high rises are strong, but mid rises are once again gaining momentum. ALL rise lengths are on-trend, so take your pick!

I have been wearing my high-rise, wide-legged jeans and pants all summer. They are cool enough because my legs are not encased in material. I also run cold.
I have seen a few fashionable women in high-rise, wide-legged, cropped cotton pants in my small rural town. Linen pants are also popular.
I can never go back to low-rise jeans. They are not comfortable for me. I feel like they are falling off.

Ha! I just read such an article, possibly the same and am about to post it to Inge's thread unless you beat me too it. Low rise is so much more comfortable on me, but I am not really planning on having my boxers pop out at this point .

I've held on to a couple of low-for-me rises (~9") and find myself reaching for them over sky-high rises quite a bit this summer. I still like the waist emphasis of a high rise, but I like the relaxed vibe of slouchy/hipslung.

It's taken a long time for me to come around to longer inseams worn lower on the hips, but I'm finally enjoying the look. And honestly I like the latitude it gives me to wear the same pants over a broader weight range (I always lose/gain from my hips first).

Ok. So I won’t toss the low-rises I’m not wearing… but what tops are supposed to go with? I honestly cannot remember what kind of tops I used to wear with low rise!

Mid-rise are definitely my favourite. I did hate low-rises, they do not suit my body and are not comfortable. Fortunately with thrifting everything is available. I usually cover my undefined waist so no-one actually sees what rise I am wearing anyway. I think the exposing of the boxer shorts will be for the youngsters for sure. Where I live the teen girls were always in short denim shorts in summer. This year they are in cycle shorts (very sheer ones) and cropped bralette-type tops. Often in a nude colour. Looks weird to me TBH.

I know I’m an outlier in liking lower rises, but that’s because I’m short in the rise and long rises are comically ill-fitting on me! But I never have and never will show underwear of any sort with any rise of pants, LOL. Lower rises in front definitely need to come with a higher rise in back to provide butt coverage. Rachy, I remember wearing longer tops with lower rises, but also I took the opportunity of lower rises to actually tuck tops in and wear belts, which cheated the look of a little longer torso on me.

I go by the Joe Six Pack rule. I want some guy with no knowledge of or interest in women's fashion and probably men's to be able to describe my outfit in one word or phrase. Red. Flowers. Stripes. Jeans.

But *not* underwear with her pants falling off.

Low rise fits me like a mid-rise and mid-rise fits me like a high rise so those work for me. High rise does not work and that is still all I see at the stores I check out, at least in the looser legs.

All rises are available now -- but you won't catch me in underwear-exposing low rises! Low rises are actually difficult for me because a mid-rise can be low-ish already...but I do like a good low-ish mid-rise, even though it shortens my short leg-line. Happy in my high rises, too!

I'm wearing full length wide legs but not often in high summer due to heat. Tons of people wearing them in Victoria/ Vancouver, though -- admittedly, more younger than older. People are also wearing wide leg crops in summer. I see a variety of rises, too, depending on the sub-group.

I haven't seen any of the "underwear over low rise jeans" styles any where so far - might be just some young girls playing with fashion ideas.
All rises are in fashion but low rise options still limited in retail - my store is full of hight rises with mid rise in limited supply ( no low rises came to the store ). I'd say just wear what feels right for you and stop worrying all together .

Glad to hear I can be in style. My newest meds are causing weight loss so that even XS hangs on me. I have been wondering what to do. Nothing. I may need new underwear. What does the exposed underwear look like, male or female? If female, plain or lacy?
