Pantone color of the year 2020

I'm not surprised that Pantone chose a shade of blue as its color of the year. Classic Blue is almost opposite on the color wheel from Living Coral, the 2019 color of the year, so both colors are complementary.

Well, I love this. Your observation about it's relation to last year's colour is insightful. I wonder too if, given the craziness happening in the US and the world at large, this colour represents a bit of a soothing balm - sort of an 'old reliable' in an upturned world? Or am I reading too much into it?

This is great in home decor but leaves me with a big *meh* vis a vis clothing. Too mainstream and traditional for my own style - however, now I'm picturing it in Angie's blog post outfit of this morning and thinking it would be pretty striking in a coat and shoes or boots.

I'd love a blue velvet sofa and ottoman in this colour, and would not be opposed to some dishes in white and blue too.

I absolutely do believe these colors are chosen with an eye to the matters of the day. Climate change, current political turmoil, etc. So yes, I agree, Helena.

I like it. It’s not exciting but it’s calming and comforting — the most universal “favorite color” is blue. It’s a safe choice but in a tumultuous world, that doesn’t feel like a bad thing.

This color is already well-represented in my wardrobe, so obviously I’m on board in a style sense. I would like to see more of it in home decor, so I’m looking forward to that. I like the idea of warm wood tones with these cool watery colors.

Well. We own 2 sofas in a very similar colour.

As for clothing...you know me, right? Angie calls me "Queen Blue," and not for nothing. https://youlookfab.com/finds/c.....ction=7850

Admittedly, many of my blues are a dark ink navy vs. this brighter, version. But, uh, I don't think I'll have any trouble working this in.

Mainstream? I guess. Funny. I never think of it that way. I think of blue as flattering, comfortable, easy to mix, and signature.

When I use the word *mainstream* , I am thinking of the lines sold in department stores (like Sears ) that cater to an older, more moderate customer ....and those departments are a sea of blue, pink, navy etc. Royal blue - which is what I see when I look at the pantone colour chip, is most definitely not one of my colours, and perhaps that's why I characterize it the way I do. Of course, the exact same thing could be said about many of the colours I wear too All in the eye of the beholder. And - when produced in really interesting pieces like Carla's puffer, for example - the colour takes on a whole different appeal. It IS a flattering and easy to wear colour for those who suit it - I don't , that's all .

Lisa, no offence taken -- I just find people's differing perceptions very interesting. I've noticed that a lot of people have those associations to blue and that makes sense -- it is, after all, the colour of many military and police uniforms and flight attendants' uniforms and suits...so I get why people see it as a conservative choice.

Blue is my black, though -- the backdrop to everything -- which I guess could be the definition of mainstream, in some ways.

Remember how some of the Pantone colours never seemed to make it to retail? In this case, we'll probably never know whether the colour takes off because there is so much of it available already, ha ha!!

Exactly. The Pantone *announcment* is important to paint stores, and that's about it. Any buying for next year in home furnishing, decor, and fashion has long since been done anyways. It's not a predominant colour in any of my Spring 2020 catalogues - at least no more so than usual. And yeah - black is TOTALLY mainstream!

I read in another article that it's supposed to be a calming color in an upsetting world. And that classic blue is the color of pepsi cans, which put me right off it.

It's a nice color however it does feel a bit less inspiring for me. It feels safe, familiar and interesting only in color combinations it's shown on the website.
@Runcarla - your coat is brighter blue to my eye and more fun for sure . You wear bright colors so well!

I like it. Looking at the last decade of colors of the year, Ultra Violet was the only one I liked, and I did purchase clothing in that color. Although I don't think I knew it was the color of the year when I purchased the items.

I like it! It's a tad brighter than navy, not as bright as cobalt. I think it's a color that really fits in well in a variety of ways, which is a beautiful message for the future.

I’m in the same camp, lisa p. This is an accent colour in my bedroom, but I have a hard time wearing it. It’s not a matter of looks, but how I feel in it. Blue is so good on Janet and Suz, but I feel kind of like I need a good dusting when I wear it. I want to be a blue person, but I don’t think I am... maybe that’s my fashion longing that I should get over...

This reminds me of Microsoft Windows core color and all the corporate logos I’ve ever seen, which means it makes me feel traditional, boring and corporate. That’s not how it looks at all on others - like Suz and Janet Rock it so well- but I just have bad associations with it

I quite like it but it has been our company logo colour for a while (we are changing to a dirty teal).... so the males who wear a polo wear this colour.

I do like blue though in general and would be open to wearing it more. And I love Blue willow china.

Funny, I just this morning was debating if I wanted blue towels for my master bathroom. It felt like a fresher color than the green I had been thinking about.

Blue is hard for me to wear. Navy is my neutral, and I wear the heck out of teal/turquoise/steel blue. But take a classic blue and put it on me vs my sister, and you can quickly tell who it was designed for (not me!)

Maybe I’ll go ahead with the blue towels then?

I went back and read Pantone’s commentary in the link. Blue IS long considered the colour of tradition, calm, stability, hard work, marital harmony. Anyways, what a funny commentary even tho it doesn’t say anything that hasn’t always been said of blue. I’m not sure if blue quite symbolises those things at the moment. Interesting to think about.
