Painted (Colored) Closets?

In a recent Washington Post about home decorating, the topic of painting the interiors of closets came up. While on one hand it does seem like a fun way to sneak a splash of color somewhere, I wondered: would it make some clothes seem less appealing, because of the way they looked next to the wall color? I'd hate to make it harder to shop my wardrobe!

Has anyone here painted their closet? How did it work out?

I just moved into a new apartment and painted the back of my tiny 40's era closet a lavender color. I found it lightened the small space up and made it feel more like shopping at a department store. I haven't found it to affect my clothing choices either, but I guess it would also depend on what your "main" colors tend to be...

I love the idea-however, it would seem like too much work to remove all my stuff to paint!

Have never done so - but was thinking of doing it this spring.

However, you bring up a point I'd never thought of - how the color would affect the clothes (i.e. possibly clash, or change the way our eyes would "read" the item's color). When all is said and done, white is pretty neutral - not a bad thing!

I'm re-doing the closets in my new guestroom (formerly my son's room) and I'm planning on painting just the back wall a nice Tiffany blue. I think it's going to be awesome!

I think it would be fabulous to have a huge walk-in closet with each wall painted a different color...

My closet is a pretty deep golden yellow like the rest of the room. My only problem is that I tend to look way more appealing (skin tone) in the room than I do out of it. Haven't had any negative affects on how the clothing looks in the closet, although some shades might. Our living room is a blue and because our house doesn't get a lot of natural light it is a very "cold, depressing" feeling room. On the other hand the tiny spare bedroom is a midnight blue and gets more light, so it is warm during the day and cozy and cave-like at night.

We recently renovated our bedroom and expanded the closets (it's a 100-year-old house and the closets were ridiculously tiny). I had the insides of the closets painted the same calming blue color as the bedroom walls, then outfitted them with white shelving. It's very soothing and nice to look at when I turn on the closet light, and I don't think it's affected how I see my clothes at all.
