Packing for Mexico City - YouLookFab Forum

We're leaving for a short trip to Mexico City on Sunday and coming back on Thursday (Thanksgiving Day). DH, my 3 boys (ages 12, 10, and 5) and my brother are all going on this trip. My brother lives in Iowa and will meet us there on Sunday. We're renting a 3-bedroom apartment through Airbnb for our group. The plan is to visit Teotihuacan on Monday and then spend the rest of our time visiting museums and seeing the sights. The temps are supposed to be in the low 70's during the day. This is the bane of my outfit existence. 70 degrees can feel warm or cool depending on other factors like how sunny it is, humidity, how breezy, etc.

The jeans and tops on the right of the photo are my traveling clothes:

Olive striped top, skinny jeans, olive utility jacket, watercolor scarf, white sneakers (not shown)
On the way back I'll wear the blue polka dot button down top with all the other items the same.

Other items:
Tops - Pink cold shoulder tee, black polka dot blouse, black chevron striped tee
Bottoms: Black skinny jeans, olive drapey cargos
Tropical print dress that I'll wear with the white sneakers.
White cardigan
Shoes: White sneakers (not shown), black boots, black sandals (maybe).

I might change the black sandals for my white loafer mules. They're also super comfortable and I can walk all day in them.

I love looking at other people's packing posts but I'm really not that good at packing a cohesive wardrobe. I'll also bring lounge clothes, camis, underwear and socks that aren't shown.

Anything I should change or missing that I should bring? Anyone been to Mexico City lately? Any advice?

Layer, and you'll be fine. You need a few toppers. It's much colder at night.

Hi Sara! I lived in Mexico City for almost 6 years, now i'm 2.5 hours away. I can tell you,70 will feel cold. No one will wear sandals, you'll freeze. The temp on the gauge will feel colder. The elevation is high (higher than Denver). Layers are your friend, as Angie mentioned. It is cold in the evenings, overnight, and until mid-morning when the sun comes up and warms things up. Wear sensible shoes like flat boots, you'll probably do a lot of walking (and obviously to the pyramids). You may want to skip the dress, unless you wear pantyhose or tights under it. I know this sounds crazy, but I think you'll agree once you get there that the temps feel much colder. ALSO, we are going through a cold snap right now and it's been near freezing, which has sent Mexicans into a tailspin, haha, we are not used to this cold weather! You'll see people bundled up like it's the arctic, bc it is to them/us!! It is also worth noting that we don't have A/C or heat in 99% of buildings, so keep that in mind as you pack (socks and warm PJs will be needed). Best of luck, have FUN, it's an amazing city!! To add onto what wise abc said, my client lives in Mexico City, and she's all bundled up at the moment. It's not warm for long during the day.

Thanks Angie and abc! That's exactly what I needed to know. I think I'll swap in a couple warmer tops and a vest to wear under my jacket. The vest is one of those Uniqlo down vests that packs up super small and I can put in my purse if I warm up during the day.

My kids, on the other hand, will be in shorts and hoodies. I can barely convince them to wear pants when it's 50 degrees out.

Be ready for the scowls from the matriarchs! They’ll think you’re abusing your kids by letting them wear shorts in that weather hahaa

The other thing like Angie mentioned is that the high temp of the day will be reached around 3-4pm and won’t last long.

Layers are best! Your swap outs sound perfect.

They'll whine "But my legs will be hoOoOoOt!" Seriously, they all run really warm and complain constantly that they're hot.

abc, your weather report is comforting actually because the weather swings in Albuquerque are very similar. We're at 5500 feet and usually have 20-30 degree swings from night to day. It's also usually chilly in the morning and we don't reach our highs until late afternoon. Today's high is 57 and the low 32.

That weather sounds just like here! You’ve got this!
