@FashIntern brought this up on the thread about carry ons, so I thought I would bring the conversation into a new thread. I travel approximately every other week for work and try to do carry on only to speed up the process.

I have both Eagle Creek and Tom Bihn packing cubes. Here is my system:

  • Similar things together- underwear, pajamas, workout wear, and then capsules for various days or activities in separate cubes. I always use the same colors at the outset so I know what's in each cube if I have to pull something out.
  • As the days progress, clean items get consolidated into cubes, worn but wearable again into other cubes, and dirty in a washable mesh laundry bag and inside a cube as well.
  • All toiletries, liquids, and other needs are duplicated and have their own dedicated bags that I review before each trip and re-fill or replace.
  • I try to get away with one pair of shoes to travel in, and one pair of shoes for the destination.

This allows me to:
  • Know immediately what is clean and dirty
  • Open my suitcase in public and not have it totally reveal my contents
  • Quickly change my clothes if I need to- I know where everything is.
  • Make sure I am not forgetting anything- the system is the same every time.
  • Sort my clothing when I get home into laundry and clean (I always pack a couple of extra small items in case of emergency/mood change). I can be home from the airport, unpacked, and in the shower 45 minutes after landing!
How do you all use packing cubes, or not?
