Packed to go on vacation. UPDATE: new pics and how it worked out.

Hi all,

I hope you all had a great Christmas/ Holiday season. And that it continues.

We are on vacation for 12 days. We are at the beach in a family cottage, then we head to Auckland for some sporting events that my sons are competing in. We will do laundry as we go. Here is what I have packed.

Our weather is unpredictable - so how it goes is hard to gauge. Activities will include beach, sports, lazing around, casual BBQ and attending sports events. Temps could be 20-30 C.

Brooklyn - thanks - yes pic of jewelry attached now. So far it has been mostly a swimsuit and shorts though!! But there will be a couple of dressier nights ahead.

I did pack jeans too but forgot to mention them but they are in a photo.

Back from vacation today. Just a quick report on the wardrobe. There were a few unworn item- yellow floral tee, green jacket, white jacket, navy sweater, one black tank (gear). My most worn were the swimsuit, bikini, running shoes, floral dress and striped dress. I washed and rewore most of the gear, the floral shorts, the tees. I should have taken my rain coat and more underwear but since I planned to do
laundry it was not a drama. We did attend a New Years party where I wore my maxi skirt and the coral tank, and had dinner out in a stunning Japanese restaurant where I wore the same tank, jeans and my kimono jacket ( which sounds wrong but it was not costume like). It was very wet a few days and very hot on others.

Not a lot of photos but here are a couple.

1 Mountain bike ride.
2 Beach prior to Triathlon.
3 Family prior to Triathlon- Jon did whole event, youngest son swam, I cycled and elder son ran in our team. Lots of fun!!
4 Out for cocktails on New Years Day.
5 MVP. - worn three days.

My shoes worked out brilliantly although ideally I wanted heels one night for the meal out.

I have been doing some forum reading but not much commenting.

And I did wear some of the jewelry- mostly the hoop earrings and the black leather cuff.

Overall I am pretty happy although I could have packed a bit lighter- hard in our very erratic weather!!

Firstly, well done on the triathlon. How cool to do it as a family!

Secondly, would it be correct to assume from the less- worn items that you had warmer weather and didn't have to pull out the jackets etc? If so, you can't really help that - it wouldn't be pleasant to be without them if you did need it.

Love the striped dress, no wonder it is a MVP, perfect for casual summer wear.

Not sure how I missed this the first time around. I would’ve said you were packed for my kind of trip.

Actually though, you outdid me with the family triathalon. What a cool thing to do together! Thanks for the photos of you all, with happy faces. I think I’ve seen that dress before. It’s great.

As for overpacking, I’m with Anne—being prepared for weather that didn’t happen is not something you can control, and far better than being chilly and miserable.

Anne- yes it was warm the first week and while I wore my trusty pink UnderArmour Hoodie (my best buy ever - I wear it twice or so every week, it was added in 2012 and it still looks great - cost me $100 as I had a $50 voucher and I felt it was really expensive) I didn't need jackets in the evening at all. When in Auckland it was wet three days but warm except for two days at the athletics when I had to wear my club jacket. I could have reduced a little though - when you are washing clothes every second day I didn't need at least one tee, one sports tank, nor six warmer options.

Jenni - the triathlon was at Pauanui beach. Jon as an individual beat our team mostly due to the bike ride (he is a great cyclist/runner and he was on a racing bike - I was on a mountain bike). My youngest son beat him out of the water in the 400m swim though so he was delighted. The swim was deceptively rough though - I was scared for him but he loved it.

Great pics - what a fun vacation! I love your MVP. I am a light packer for air travel (usually carryon only), but I admit bring everything when I travel by car.

Thanks Brooklyn - that was the one time on holiday my hair behaved!! Swimming, hats, not blowdrying - I am counting down to the hair appointment next week....think I might tweak it a little..

Thanks Karen - me too, we had plenty of room so it did not matter but I prefer slightly less.
