Outfit lab:longer Denim shorts

This Australian summer I bought a hewi: summer shorts. I wanted a longer style but they have been hard to find for years and I finally found these. I would have preferred waist high, but didn't find. Loose shorts are probably more flattering but bunch up annoyingly between my legs. So I am aware these may not be flattering, eg see Imogen's post on shorts and body shape https://insideoutstyleblog.com.....-html.html

Anyway, I would love to have your opinions on which tops work, particularly which styles, length and colours. (I am not attached to the tops or even that fond of most. 1-4 were hand me downs)

I find the tops # 1 and # 6 the most flattering. Both have in common defined waist, defined shoulders and right length. I also like # 7. Also a fluid top would be nice, but then I would choose something more refined than # 2-5. You look good in these "long shorts"! (I call them bermudas).

I LOVE these shorts Anne, and wear them. I find them very flattering! I have two pairs. They are available in the Netherlands every season because people like to wear them.

All the tops work. Personally, #3, #5 and #7 are my least favourite.

I like these! I have a slight preference for the more fitted ones, but in hot weather loose and flowy might be more comfortable ... I might try a semi tuck with the loose ones if that tweak floats your boat!

My favorites are the shorter-but-not-really-cropped pink one and the polka dots. I’m not a fan of #3.

I like the curved hem of #7, the waist definition of #6 & the cropped length of #5. The fitted tee in #4 also works in the shoulders, but not sure if the hem is slightly too long? (I'm thinking of the knee-length shorts as cutting you into 'thirds').

2, 5, 6, and 7 are my favorites! Shorts are so hard and jean shorts might be the hardest. I don't like the really fitted tops because the bottoms are fitted (just a preference thing... plus thinking of how I like that breezy feeling in hot weather!).

I have personally found that with jean shorts I prefer woven tops (crisp poplin or linen blends), since they skew a little more polished and I like their contrast to the more RATE denim bottoms. The exception is I like a tank that just skims the body, like #2.

FWIW I liked the more fitted tops too. However I'll need to find non- fitted ones that work too, as sometimes it's just too hot for anything else..

I noticed that number 7 was polarizing. I like it as a top, and I think it looks great tucked, but personally didn't like it with the shorts. I also felt like the whole outfit was too low contrast.

Angie, thanks. I thought mine were shorter than yours, but looking at the pictures they are about the same length. Nice to have your approval (teenage daughters are not so keen!) I agree with your least favourite list.I'm trying to remember if you have a post on outfits with shorts this length. - I'll have a look after.

Helena - yes flowy is often what I need, thanks for the half tuck suggestion.

Thanks Stag. Interestingly I'm think the pink one is the one I'd be least likely to wear. Too much likelihood of showing skin. I think if I was going to do that I'd go for a higher rise bottom.

Zaeobi - thanks for the breakdown of those details - very helpful. You have pinpointed the exact issue I worry about with the outfit - the vertical dimensions and how it cuts the torso. I agree with all your points (except that I might be too inhibited to wear number 5 - see above!)

Lesley I think you have really got into the nub - this outfit WOULD look better with woven tops. And I'm realising more and more that hot weather woven tops are a real wardrobe hole for me right now. In fact I'm planning to go to the shops today and see if I can rectify the situation!

I wear shorts like this quite often. I like to wear them with woven tops (examples in Finds) untucked or tucked. Sleeved versions with sleeves rolled up in heat.

I also wear them with blouses left untucked (examples below). With blouses t's (Zara striped top) and with looser t's, sometimes semi-tucked.

Good luck shopping! Look for silk & linen in your floaty new tops. They are much more durable than ultra-thin cotton.

Thanks Jenni - I think I just like more contrast. I'm not wearing any makeup in no 7 (or any of them) - perhaps if I were I'd feel better about it. I also may like it better if I semi-tucked - but despite the reminders above I tend to forget about that option!

Thanks Stag. I didn't read yours until after I went shopping. I did in fact come home with a white cotton top - and it is actually at the same cropped top length you liked in the pink tee outfit. I did see some linen out there but not silk. I do have dresses that have been very heavily worn for years that are made of cotton so I find it durable. Much better than viscose which I find wears very easily.

I might hit the op (thrift) shops next. I need tops in colours other than white!
