Outfit Lab: Plaid Tulle Skirt

Hi everyone,
It’s been a while. Happy New Year! For 2024 I want to wear more of the clothes in my closet, especially the things I love that may be slightly too dressy for my casual community. I think I long for more glamour and feel better in mixed refinement rather than completely relaxed.

I’d like some advice on wearing this plaid tulle skirt and I’ve posted a few outfits for critique. Please don’t be afraid to give me feedback or ideas on how to improve or other ways to wear this. I know a few of us have this skirt so maybe you have suggestions. (Suz and Janet)

And lastly I’ve ordered a slate gray cropped leather jacket and am hoping it’s on the blue side. It will go with a lot in my closet including this skirt. More so than the black one.

Yes I agree ... These all look great to me
If I was nitpicking I might say I would prefer a shorter denim shirt (1) just because the longer one covers the skirt so much, but that's not to say it looks bad, it just doesn't give the skirt it's place in the sun! YLF!

Love the jean coat in #1!

I think these all work really well! If I have to pick favorites I would go with #4 because I like the proportion of that top with the skirt, and #8 because I like the brightness of the jacket.

Such a great skirt.

You have a knack for styling so I don't think you will have a problem with your goals!

My favorites are 1, 4, and 6. The gray backpack bag seems a bit better than the white crossbody. To add a color, instead of pink, do you have a darker bag? Like emerald green or rusty orange?

These are all great! I actually really like the unexpected proportions of #1 — it sort of plays down the skirt a bit, which might be a nice alternative for getting more use out of it. I should take notes — I don’t wear mine unless it’s a dressy outfit, and there are very few dressy occasions anymore….

Well, I love the long denim coat in number one! This seems like a solution to a lot of outfits, when a heavier coat doesn't work and a shorter coat doesn't work either. (That's just a note I'm making in my head.) I also particularly like the sweater knotted at the waist, which gives the eye a wonderful curve to travel, and then ends at those fabulous boots.

I really like the light colored purse, for the texture it adds. The pale gray backpack is also wonderful. From my point of view, I do like a bit of contrast in the tones of the outfit. But honestly, everything here is fantastic!

This is a beautiful skirt. I want one. You could wear it with a sweatshirt and sneakers to make it look more casual. An interesting graphic tee would be great. Pair it with a jean jacket in blue denim. You are wise to look at short jackets. Leather can also give a casual look.

Yay, skirt triplet! I think you've nailed the stylings, as usual. Like Helena I generally prefer a short jacket/ cardigan with this, but like Janet, I think the proportions and low contrast of #1 works really well and is a great alternative! You have given me an idea, so thank you! Might try. my own skirt with a longer cardigan.

I have to admit I don't wear this skirt myself except for going out/ events and what I call at home made up events, i.e. a nice at home supper with Mr. Suz or holiday celebrations at home. That means it does not get a lot of wear in a typical year but I do wear it about 4-5 times per season. I think it has long closet longevity because it's so unusual, so over time the wears will be reasonable.

I like all of these too with special love for 4. People have become very casual in their dress now but I do think there is some pushback on this. Dressy does not equate to uncomfortable.

RobinF that is a chambray shirt dress and I think I’ll try it open cinched in the back to give it some shape. Thank you, I like #4’s proportions too.

Janet, I was thinking of trying it as a petticoat under another dress or skirt, but it might create too much bulk? The chambray dress might look better with a belt. I searched for both your and Suz’s outfits with this skirt. Love them all.

Thanks Joy! A sweatshirt and sneakers is exactly the kind of look I was hoping would work, but I could figure out how to balance the volume of both the sweatshirt and skirt. Maybe I’ll play with it.

I really like all of these, Lana. They each have elements that dress down the skirt a bit, so I could see them working in a variety of situations. I especially like the shorter booties and tights/leggings for a more casual look. The white plush bag strikes me as a genuis pairing with the skirt: I love how it is luxe in its plush way, while the skirt is luxe in its tulle way, and together they give a playful, not overly serious effect. #6 strikes me as a very You outfit, which I would think you could just wear anywhere! I also adore that creative leather cummerbund look with the skirt in 5. You have found so many great options here!

All your outfits work wonderfully, prefer the shorter tops/jackets but the white longer jacket looks great too, perfect with your hair color. Your new slate grey cropped moto should work seamlessly with it all as well.

I love this skirt.

I really like #2, but I think I’d love it with a taller boot. Maybe try the boots in #6. Or change out the boots for a tight and sneakers.

I’ll be honest I love the denim coat on #1. But not with this skirt. For me the hem lines just don’t mesh for me, but again, I’d try change out the footwear. Because I think part of what doesn’t work for me is where the boot hits, then a couple of inches higher you have the hem of the skirt , then a couple of inches above that the denim jacket and all three are different textures and weights and its overwhelming to me.

wow! I also own this skirt and was thrilled to see how you styled it so many ways. I wear it rarely (unfortunately) but when I do I feel like a million... you LOOK like a million in yours. I have a blue moto very much like the one you have on order and wear it with the skirt. I like how you put together #6 and may experiment a bit with the lighter topper idea.

The toppers in 1 and 2 don't showcase the skirt as much as #6. I hope the new leather jacket is sufficiently cropped as I really like the length of your top in #4 and think this is the perfect length cropped top for the skirt.

All renditions are great as you have a great eye for what suits you. How I dress is definitely on the dressy end of the spectrum of what people wear in my coastal city. My rationale is that we need people like us to make others feel comfortable being dressy too! Lana, you always look fashionable and fabulous, it is a treat to see you post.
