I think even though I'm a renter with almost exclusively Ikea furniture, I've been able to add my style to my house. Though it helps that it's an adorable 1920s adobe casita with arched doorways and a lot of the original cabinets, kitchen stuff, and doors. Because I'm renting I didn't paint any of the walls, and it has hardwood floors with a warm, golden tone throughout. The house itself is very classic, warm, and understated, though the arched doorways and older stuff adds some flare. It also has some great windows and gets lots of sunlight!
I further spiced it up with pops of color. Some of my ikea furniture is white or wood, but I have a couple of bookshelves and a shoe rack that I painted various shades of bright blue, a red ikea poang chair, and some red throw pillows. While green is my favorite color, I like the way blues mix and add a sense of calm in houses, so most of the pops of color in my house are blues - all of the bedding is blue colors (in an otherwise white room), and the shower curtain is a blue that looks great with the sea green tiles in the shower.
I hope that my personal style is as great as my house - I like the mix of simple and classic with bursts of color and character! I think if I had bright furniture and bright walls it would be too much to take in all at once, which is how I feel about outfits with too many colors and patterns and accessories. But I also hate outfits that are just neutrals, I think color is necessary to bring some life and excitement into the mix!
