OT travel--take a short YLF break and look what happens

Looks like rae, you decided on Italy for your dream honeymoon trip? Excellent choice!

Hubby and I are going to be in northern Italy from 4/10 to 4/23. We will be based in Bologna, and are planning on doing a ton of day trips in the Emilia-Romagna area. Parma, Ravenna, Ferrara, some mineral spa towns if we can get there without a car, etc etc. The region's really well known for its fantastic food, and not overriden with tourists (as opposed to Rome--not that I didn't love Rome and find it very worthwhile to go there.)

We fly in and out of Milano, but I don't think we'll stay more than a night there. I doubt there will be much serious shopping, therefore (with my husband? He is NOT the type who's willing to spend hours traipsing around in stores...will have to figure out some extremely efficient shopping method for while I'm there.)

So if any of you bump into us on the street, be sure to say "Ciao!" I am trying to study italiano, too. Wish me luck with that!

Any travel tips I would accept gratefully. Will be thinking of all you while we're there!

Oh, fantastic. You will have an amazing time - the food is amazing.
You can get all kinds of places without a car. Six years ago, we stayed on a farm stay (agriturismo) between Florence and Bologna, and took the train or local bus for day trips. You are bringing it all back.
The architecture, the art, the wine! House wine, grocery store wine - amazing. Accidentally ordering crazy delicious food because we had no idea what they were saying. Yay.

My only advice is to relax and enjoy and leave all the stresses and worries of your life behind. Have a fab time.

Ha, fern! That's funny! Your post is making me really excited now. I have this feeling it's going to be really fantastic, and we are staying in a private room in someone's home (www.airbnb.com--it's a great option) so we will be saving some money and getting local input and recommendations on places to eat, go, things to do, etc.

I will toast YLFers every time I pick up a glass of delicious wine!

We lived in northern Italy for a couple of years and have been back a few times. We were there again last summer. You can get move anywhere with the trains and buses.
One of my favorite places is Sirmione, it's on lake garda and has a mineral spa in town (tiny old fort city). The spa is $$$$ but there happens to be a place in the lake the poor folk (me) use that is free. They lined it with large rocks to keep the hot water in.

OH, how wonderful! Kyle will be in Italy before me, so apparently it is the place to go! Watch out, Italy, fabbers are coming...

I need to shop efficiently with my hubby, too. Hm, after thrift shopping with mine for 10 years, my advice is to know what you want to look at and head right for it.

Please let us know how airbnb is - I looked into something similar, but I wasn't happy with the answer that site gave me about safety and screening and such.

We stayed at a small B and B close to Malpensa airport for one night and took the train to the city. No shopping but we did manage to see "Last supper" (reservations required) and you can walk through much of the well-know/historic Milano in a day. I have very warm memories of the city.

We enjoyed using our limited knowledge of Italian (about a month's worth of audio lessons), and it came in very handy a few times.
