OT: Tipping for bang/fringe trim?

My hair stylist charges $15 for a fringe trim. I feel like $15 is expensive, but I respect her time and skill, so I don't mind. They always ask if I want to put something extra on the card! Do you think I need to tip on top of the $15? She's the salon owner. I always thought you weren't expected to tip salon owners, but I tip her for regular cuts. If I need to tip for fringe trims too I think I'll grow it out!

really? wow-- my stylist give me trims for free (which I do tip) but honestly I'd be put out to be expected to tip on a $15 bang trim.
Taylor.... am I being unreasonable in thinking this?

hmmm. I don't charge regular clients for bang trims myself, but then again they don't pop in too often between cuts for that.

Tipping is not necessary for a bang trim. IMO I refuse to accept.

However . If you go many, many months between haircuts and show up every 3 months for a bang trim, and grow the back long, that essentially is your haircut:)

I have a full cut every three months ($60, I tip $12 and always buy product), then have a bang trim about once in between.

I always ended up trimming bangs myself because it was just too vague what they expect. You could ask the receptionist when you call next time. I have had great responses from them.

Also, I have NEVER had an owner turn down a tip. Maybe those days are over when you consider the cost of keeping a business these days. . .

haha- actually my stylist often takes the time to teach me techniques on trimming my own hair since she knows that I don't hesitate to grab my scizzors when I am having an issue.

I'm just jealous that you can go 3 months between cuts. I'm lucky to go 6 weeks!

Too weird! I almost posted about this same topic today before heading out for MY bang trim! However, my stylist gives complimentary bang trims between cuts, so I was unsure how much to tip her on that regard. I decided on $5. You're in Madison, right? I go to HAIR on Monroe Street.

I have never heard of a salon charging a regular customer for a bang trim. Ever. And everything I have ever read states that you don't tip the owner. ( My salon trims my hair for free any time I want - I ALWAYS give the girls $5-$7. )

I find 15 bucks a lot for a bang trim that probably takes five minutes and gets squeezed in between appointments. No, I would not tip if it's the owner. I would tip $3 ( 20%) if it is one of the workers for the trim.

Honestly, that seems overpriced for a bang trim! My stylist doesn't charge for bang trims either.

Oh my goodness. My hair stylist trims fringes for free. I have that done every 3 - 4 weeks and a cut every 6 weeks. But then it literally takes 30 seconds to trim my fringe. I don't have much hair!

Mine too, it's only a minute or two! Thanks for the recommendation Anne! I like my stylist but I've been starting to think about trying another place. I actually think I like her more as a person than a stylist. And she's adamant about their products and makes me feel guilty if I've been using drugstore brands. It's a hard decision!

Kristine - if you're looking for a change, I highly recommend Tiffany at HAIR. I've been going to her since they were a two-chair shop off State Street ... so about 12 years or so. She works on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I've never been disappointed by her. A hair cut with her will run you $55.

The last place you need extra guilt from is your hairstylist. Seriously. Also I have never been charged for having my fringe trimmed and $15 seems excessive.

EDIT: I hope this doesn't sound disrespectful to hairstylists. That's not how I meant it. Sometimes hairstylists have helped me find really great products, but I don't think there should be an expectation or pressure to buy product in addition to your do.

Tipping etiquette in the UK is very different than in the US where I believe tipping supplements the wage. I tip my salon with a box of chocolates which always goes down well. I don't tip for fringe trim but very rarely require one.

In the UK I sometimes tip the assistant who washes my hair, but more often than not, it is my stylist who does it and I don't tip him. I just don't get paying £50 for a haircut and then tipping.

In NZ you would never be expected to tip your hairdresser or even your waiter for that matter, we just don't have a tipping culture.

I don't have bangs but a $15 bang trim seems a lot; especially when the entire cut is $60. Cutting bangs is not 25% of your regular appointment....

Re, the owner of the salon thing, I've always been told that you don't tip the owner BUT at my salon (actually my old salon since I moved) the owner charges significantly more (I think double) than the the other hair stylists (which all charged the same.) So, it made sense to me. I went to one of the other hair stylists so I always tipped.

Confession: I never realized until 2 years ago that you are supposed to separately tip your shampooer. I just assume they all shared like waitresses share tips with hostesses. I feel horrible, especially because I went to elementary-high school with a girl who was my shampooer for a long time!!
