OT : the price of concert tickets

OMG - I wanted to treat my sister and a friend to see Bon Jovi. I haven't been to a major concert in years. I almost fainted when I saw ticket prices. There were seats in the middle to front between $2800 and $5800 !!!! I was even more amazed to see them sold out through out Europe and many cities in the US.

Who buys these tickets ? If I wanted really good seats it would cost about $18,000 ! That's what our van cost.

Concerts are major revenue generators. It's where they make their money as opposed to album sales.

There are definitely a lot of people out there who aren't even remotely rich, but who are die hard fans, that will invest in an experience like this. There is usually no room for a casual fan at events like these, with high profile/legendary artists.

Were these prices from the actual venue, or were they being resold through a scalper/ticket resaler? Those prices sound really high to me--when Bon Jovi came here, the prices weren't even in the same ballpark.

Unfortunately, that just seems to be the way that all types of tickets are going. I was looking at UFC tickets, and they range from $80 (at the top and back to a huge stadium where you probably can't even see the ring) up to $4000. There's no way that we can afford to go to an event like that right now, but everything seems to be the same. I was looking at a comedy club, and tickets ranged from $15-$35 per ticket, but then you have a two drink (at $8 a pop) and one appetizer minimum. Now I see why when the hubs and I can get away, we just end up at the dollar movie theater!

I think the most I ever spent on concert tickets was about $500 (Coldplay); I wouldn't pay anymore than that.

Thinking about it now, $500 was way too much. I am not that into music and Maya is right - it's for the diehard fans. I'd rather buy an iPhone

I don't think they were that expensive in London - perhaps £200 - £300? But for the O2, which is the major concert venue in London you normally pay around £80 for a reasonable seat. I think that we paid £90 for our U2 tickets for their Wembly concert last summer. Did those tickets include entertainment packages and backstage passes?

We are quite lucky living in London in that we normally get more than one show, so tickets are reasonably easy to get. Tickets to the theatre can be a lot harder and more expensive. You still pay around £50 for the Phantom of the Opera.

Just checked the tickets for Murrayfield Edinburgh and they are £56.00 - £76.00, I guess demand drives the ticket prices.

My work Christmas party was at a venue next door to where Bon Jovi was playing in December- we heard the whole thing!

That does sound expensive, we paid £50 to see Lionel Richie at the LG arena Birmingham UK with seats on the sloped bit at the back. Similar price for Bryan Adams and Meatloaf. Would expect to pay the prices you quoted for an all inclusive package to include transport and a night in a hotel!!!!!! x

Oh my god, what prices!
I was at a Bon Jovi concert 2006 in Koblenz (about 70 km away from my hometown) and I paid 60€ for the ticket. It was open air and there was only a price difference between normal tickets and tickets where you were located right before the stage. We had the cheaper ones but were almost right behind the barrier because we were fairly early. It was great!
But even if it were great music, I would never pay more than 100€ for a concert ticket. Even that is much money for me, and there are many good bands around you can see for free or little money.

Lyn - You paid $500 for Coldplay??! Were they front and center?? I saw them a few years back for $25.

I go to quite a few concerts (last year i went to 5) because music is one of my major loves. But i hate ticket pricing, ticketmaster fees etc. It can just feel like a giant rip off. Now i try to see bands i love when they're just starting out, enter contests to win them etc. Last year I saw Sleigh Bells for $12. Now they're stuff is getting played on MTV. I saw Muse for free a few years ago by winning a contest @ a bar. This year I got tickets to see The Decemberists in Feb. for a bday present!

This is just reinforcing my love of festivals! I love going to the Sasquatch festival at the Gorge in George, WA. This year, a single day pass is $79.50, and a four day pass is $295, and ticket prices include the cost of parking and/or camping. Granted, Bon Jovi will never play there, but Coldplay did back in 2003! And over the years I've seen a ton of great bands at Sasquatch!
