That. Is. Revolting.

Team cream cheese here! Buttercream is too sweet for me.

Team buttercream on a typical vanilla/choc cake for me (which is the majority of cake I've been devouring of late). However, I have to say that I am absolutely a team cream cheese frosting whenever I have carrot cake! There is absolutely no other possible substitute in my opinion and I will refuse to eat the cake if it is butter-cream frosting (just call me princess!).

Ooooh I'm with you Maya - DEFINITELY Team Buttercream!!

But, if Chocolate Ganache or similar is available I will always opt for it.... heck I'd even have choc on carrot cake LOL

Don't like cake or frosting at all - can I be on Team Pie?

Laura, you can be team crazy. How can anyone not like cake? The possibility didn't even occur to me. I think we had a team pie vs team cake challenge already though. I'm not a huge fan of pies myself. Not even apple pie (sorry, America).

Call me Team Crazy then, and pass the cherry pie ... or lemon meringue ...

I vote some alternative such as chocolate ganache or meringue icing, but if you are forcing me to vote then I'm team cream cheese - especially if it comes with a carrot cake!

Cream cheese, not even close.
Buttercream is WAY too sweet for me and I hate the way it leaves this sort of oily slick on the roof of my mouth. I almost always knock it off the cake or cupcake so that I can continue to enjoy the cake-y goodness without risking an oil spill in my mouth.
I just made a batch of coconut cupcakes with a cream cheese frosting (butter, cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla and almond extracts) and it was amazingly light and oh-so-delicious. I will NOT tell you how many times I stuck a spoon in the bowl to "taste test."

Since I'm still enjoying the leftover pumpkin bars, I'll say team cream cheese. Overall, I'm usually not a frosting person.

Oh if you make real buttercream frosting in a saucepan with flour thickener and lots of real butter, it is the winner hands-down. Just not too many people do that. It's to die, literally (arteries/all that butter!)

What many bakeries call buttercream is just Crisco whipped with sugar. ICK!

I was so happy to see the comment above about Red Velvet Cake with real buttercream frosting, I had to log in to contribute! That is absolutely correct - just about every place ruins it with cream cheese frosting. The traditional cake is made with the labor-intensive buttercream I described above.

Totally agree Mamark. Genuine, well prepared buttercream is splendiferous. I'm not talking about the canned trans fat stuff.

Also, ladies, I don't get the comments about buttercream being too sweet! You can control the sweetness by controlling the sugar, just as you would with CC frosting. CC frosting can also be sickeningly sweet if you add too much sugar.

Megan, I wish I could send you some Magnolia cupcakes. Alas, I don't think they'd make it through the journey.

Laura, you are totally captain of Team Crazy! And you can have my pie *pushes plate away*

Laura, you and I can happily enjoy Maya's rejected pies together. Mmmm.

Team Cream cheese - though I don't mind buttercream.

What none of you have mentioned, and what I make the most is lemon icing - just icing sugar and lemon juice. That is my favourite!

Thanks Maya! After my holiday in NYC I dreamt of red velvet cake from Magnolia and white Chocolate peanut butter popcorn from Dale and Thomas...mmmmmm

Okay, I don't know what freaks me out more: that gruesome turkey and potato layer "cake" that was linked to, or the fact that Laura and Kari don't LIKE CAKE! Madness, I say!

Those of you who are hatin' on buttercream: I'm guessing that you have never had good buttercream! A grocery store cake is usually an abomination, we can all agree on that. But homemade is another story completely. When I make it I whip lots of cream into it too (along with the butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla) so it is mildly sweet, fluffy, and delicious. Then there is chocolate buttercream, or chocolate mocha buttercream! Yumminess to infinity!

Maya, and anyone else, you are welcome to my house for cake anytime!
