Oh, rice, without a second's thought! I get all kinds of flack for having Irish blood and no love of potatoes, but that's just the way it is. That said, I find something very satisfying about cutting or working with potatoes in the kitchen. Their earthiness feels and smells very wholesome and soothing somehow. Or maybe I j uwst find cooking therapeutic. When I'm in a bad mood, nothing grounds me more than preparing a huge pot of homemade soup.

"Po-ta-toes! boil em', mash em', stick em' in a stew!"

(Okay, now you know! I'm a big Lord of the Rings geek!)

No melted cheese?? How about on pizza?

Grilled cheese sandwiches?
Cottage cheese is right with mayo in the cannot do category. It is hard to be around anyone eating cottage cheese for me.

I just cannot participate in these! I must be the most boring, non-discerning person in the world. I love both. Couldn't live without Either.

Like Marianna, my background includes ALOT of boiled potatoes and fish. YUM !!!

But I love Asian food too.......

Biscuitsmom - now that is potato love !

Late to the game here. I have to go with Team Rice, purely for my love of sushi.

I'm forced to Team Potatoes because, although I love rice, it doesn't love me back and even a little bit of it shoots my blood sugar levels up more than bread, pasta or potatoes. My "rice" is now steamed broken up cauliflower.

I'd have to go with team potatoes, if I have to choose. I'm also on team mayo and melted cheese. To be perfectly honest though, when it comes to food, I'm pretty much on team everything. Except team ranch dressing.

Ha! (All you younger ones will see one day!) I eat neither! I follow a lower carb diet. It's the only way I can maintain my weight and not be continually starving (or thinking about food) all day. For me it's worth it--my nice clothes keep on fitting!!

I'm on an inverted low carb diet. No meat, lots of carbs. I wouldn't have it any other way!

Hmm...I love good french fries (thin and golden brown please - not too crunchy but not soggy, either - with either ketchup or McD's sweet & sour sauce) or a nice, loaded baked potato, but I rarely ever actually cook them, but I cook rice a couple of times a week, usually, so I have to go with team rice. MMMM.....yellow rice, oh yeah, team rice.

I like mayo (on sandwiches) but it's been dropped for health/weight reasons. I couldn't live without melted cheese, though. There's nothing like a nice dinner of grilled cheese and tomato bisque on a fall day.

I'm on team Hate Mayo. Cannot touch the stuff!

I also LOVE melted cheese. Honestly, I love cheese in any and all forms. I'm a cheese addict!

I love them both. If I have to choose a side I'll go with team potatoes.

I, too, like mayo with certain restaurant fries.

I'd pick bread or pasta over potatoes or rice any day. Does that make me weird?

Lisa - I actually make cold rice salad with corn, cornichon pickles and whatever else strikes my fancy and I have no problem adding a bit of mayo to the mixture. Lowfat yogurt is better obviously but mayo is so much more delicious!

Now if you asked me about bread, then it is a whole different game!

I like both but I just love potatoes. Currently I'm on a sweet potato kick. I've been making them into fries in my toaster oven. Could eat them everyday!

Another carb queen here. I like both but will plump for rice as it is so easy to cook and I too love it with Asian style cooking.

Angie, I thought you have said before you didn't eat potatoes?

Anne, we very rarely eat potatoes at home - you are completely right. But in the Netherlands, it's a different story

Jean, no pizza with melted cheese for me.

Bella-Your salad sounds delish, and mayo too, yum! I'll even add may to my hamburgers (with ketchup already on them).

Rice for me! I like potatoes too, but eat rice more often.

Threads like this are so much fun to read.

oh wow you girls are funny and we certainly have a diverse bunch of foodies here!!

Once upon a time I was TEAM POTATO all the way - LOVE THEM!!!

But, the girls have a rice allergy, and are intolerant to all members of the Deadly Nightshade family of foods - of which potato belong (and tomato, eggplant, chilli, capsicum etc) - so currently my pantry is bare of both. If I go out and indulge in forbidden foods though I always order potato!

As for room temperature cheese - ewwwwww - that would be melted here for 9 months of the year anyway LOL Sorry Angie I am absolutely not with you on that one!!

Mayo - ok in small doses - I love it with mashed eggs actually...

Angie doesn't even like fondue? Huh. I am perplexed.

What are mashed eggs? Is that the same as scrambled?

Baked POTATO toped with butter, chives and sour cream! Yummmm

Pasta!!-)

I really like rice and potatoes, but don't eat either of them all that often actually (not counting fries and crisps, I completely agree with Scarlet about that: "but in terms of joy in life, how could I give up fries and potato chips?").

I have been craving Asian inspired food quite often lately, so I'm sure my rice intake will increase because of that too.

Angie: Ok, I'll admit that there might be a few Dutch people who know how to make a decent fry, but Belgian fries are still the best in the world;-))
And yes, in Belgium and the Netherlands people love mayonaise on their fries. Even I eat them like that sometimes (although I can't stand mayo on anything else, yep call me strange). I prefer them with cold curry sauce or tartare sauce though. Don't knock it until you've tried it;-)

Go Inge, straight from the horse's mouth! I told you so, Belgian fries are the best!
I am with you Inge. I love all sorts of fries sauces that they have at Belgian friteries, so so yummy!

Mmm this thread has made me hungry. Team potatoes for me, but I love pretty much any form of carbs - to my waistlines detriment, of course!

Rice all the way. I ate potatoes too much growing up, and never cared for them.
I understand strong feelings about mayo - dh can't stand it, so we never have it at home. I can live without mayo or ketchup, but not without mustard

I would gladly never eat rice again, I don't dislike it but it doesn't do anything for me. I do like a nice rice pudding though and it's a vehicle for fish in my beloved sushi.

I'm strongly in favor of potatoes.

- Mashed with spicy mustard
- Lemon roasted potatoes with garlic and oregano
- Homefries with peppers and onion
- boiled new potatoes drizzled with olive oil and fresh dill
- french fries with spicy aioli
- pan roasted baby potatoes in duck fat
- boiled baby new potatoes cut in half and topped with creme fraiche and caviar
- the crispy bottom layer of potatoes in a spanish tortilla
- GNOCCHI!!
- baked potato with butter/sour cream/chives/bacon
- potato salad with parsley/basil/dill/scallion and mayo/vinegar
- mashed sweet potatoes with butter/cinammon/allspice
- quartered red skinned potatoes roasted with grated cheddar and blue cheese
- baked potato soup or vichyssoise

The only way I won't eat potatoes is if they're hashbrowns or if they have touched ketchup. I'm a foodie - ketchup is an abomination unless it is home made.
