Three years ago, my oldest niece had to undergo a bone graph to repair damage to her femur caused by a cyst (the bone had thinned to near breaking). We thought she was doing well and that at her appointment she would be cleared to resume normal activity (she's been restricted from running, jumping, and all sports for 3 years). However, in the past week she has began to complain of pain in that area again and walking with a noticable limp. An X-ray was taken early this week and she once again has a cyst - a larger one this time.
I wanted to ask you ladies to remember my niece, my brother and sister in law, and the rest of our family as we wait to find out what steps the doctors will take next. If it is surgery, she will be in a full leg cast for at least 12 weeks.
Thank you!
It's offical. My niece will undergo surgery. The surgeon is going place a metal plate along side of her femur to offer stablity and strength, will remove the cyst, and fill in the space with artifical bone. She will restricted from all sports, dance, etc for 8 weeks, then will go back for a re-evaluation. The surgeon will leave the plate in until he is satisfied that her leg is 100% healed. Then she'll have another surgery to remove the plate.
Obviously, this is not the news we wanted. But there is a bright spot - she will NOT have to wear a cast this time. And will be able to start walking as soon as the anesthesia wear off. Last time, she was in a full leg cost (think waist to toes) for 8 weeks, and couldn't walk on her cast for the first 2 weeks.
Thank you again for your continued prayers.
