OT: Our day at the dog show - YouLookFab Forum

Thank all of you who posted suggestions for my show outfit yesterday. I have been feeling very tired and over-committed at work so my creativity is functioning at half capacity. I ended up going with a short sleeved stripey jacket (grey/white) and a charcoal pencil skirt with a hot pink cami and my Miz Mooz Cabots. I actually got stopped 3 different times and asked about them!

It was a crazy morning with me almost missing the ferry over to the Olympic Peninsula (on my way to Sequim for locals). I was meeting a friend who was already on line to board so I had to grab my little dog and all my gear to dash over, find her and load up, all just in time before the line started to move. EEK! Sadly, in my hurry I forgot my camera. No photos. BOO!

My friend has a very beautiful ChowChow who was the only one entered and ended up winning Best of Breed by default. That meant we were there for the day. Thank goodness it was gorgeous out. He performed beautifully in the Group ring but did not get a placement. She was happy to get him out and have fun.

Regan was awesome. It was only our second time having competition in the puppy class and she won first of three. Yay! Then we went on to compete against the 'big girls'. She won Reserve Winner's Bitch which is sort of like First Runner Up. Not the win, but the next best thing anyway. I was so proud of her. We had a lot of fun just hanging around and cheering on our friend. Regan slept in her little dog bed amid all sorts of noise and crowds. What a girl!

How fun - thank you for sharing about your day, even though I'd have loved to see a photo of you too. Well done to you and Regan! (What a sweet and beautiful face she has.) I used to attend dog shows for fun when I was a kid, and I did some amateur obedience & fitting & showing competitions through 4-H with my Sheltie for a while. I should really scope out a show again - but since I can't have a dog where I live right now, and badly want to, I need to proceed with caution where puppies/dogs for sale could potentially be involved. It's too easy to fall in love!

You are safe at most shows, Kari - all the dogs there are typically spoken for! The Seattle show is held at the Quest Expo Center (or whatever it's being called now) in March. Next pretty close one is at the end of August at Marymoor park. If you go, come by Basenjis!

Oooh; I adore dog shows! And I was hoping for a pic of your friend's chow I love those! The last time I went to a dog show was the first time I learned that my dog wasn't an actual breed... he was kind of the Heinz 57 kind... lol. apparently that's not a category you can compete in.

Regan, thank you for sharing your interest. I hope to see pictures next time. I'm sure you looks great. I've seen a few confirmation dog shows in the past and was surprise by the lack of style of most outfits the worn by women, especially the shoes. While the men typically look dapper. What Not to Wear even dressed a handler once, much more fab after. Why do you think that is? Have things changed?

I compete with my dogs too, but in sports. There is little gear style in this group. I would say, I'm team polished here too for gear.

Good question, Eva. I remember that episode of WNTW. Lynne, I'm trying to imagine a YLF meetup with our dogs and am afraid my head would explode from the fabulousness of it.

Lynne, that is my white border collie. She is all white except a classic B&W face and a black splat on her tail. We have a total of 3 border collies.

(That being said, I'm not 100% sure whether Shadow would make it or not - she's great with other people and gentle but shy with other dogs, but she unfortunately gets carsick easily!)

I'm not entirely sure what is up with the lack of style at shows. There are certainly notably well dressed individuals, both men and women. But I think the less fashion forward look is a combination of lack of interest, lack of time, lack of funds as much as lack of taste. Many exhibitors put the need for pockets (I eschew this "need" and find ways to work around it) colors that compliment their dog and low price as their first priorities. Men really don't fare any better than women. I cannot tell you how many ill fitting sport coats I have seen! With shoes, well, I think it's just people being practical. In most breeds we have to run, and it may be in wet grass or on uneven ground with most handlers being old enough that they care about comfort and not going for a tumble more than style. I'm a shoephile so I buck that trend.

PS - Regan is my puppy! I'm Andrea. We hope to compete in Rally and possibly Agility next year. High five to other dog sport folks!

I dunno if Re is up for an in-the-city meet up (puppy gets boooored), but I do take her to Marymoor occasionally! She is also a very active, silly thing.

There is a lack of style in the agility and disc dog world. Most of it needs to be casual and gear and all have to be functional. Tie dye is the thing in agility and disc dog. I love it when done nicely, but there are some wild shirts out there.
