OT: my hometown is flooded

There are 5 bigger rivers and many small streams and rivulets. The oldest part is located mainly on river isles:

There was already a huge flood in 1997:

About 1/3 of the city was under water:

Looks like the same thing is going to happen now. The walls and levees are broken and water is already there:

I live quite far from the nearest river, so I'm safe (although the walls in my basement are wet). However, the situation is not good. Two huge floods in 13 years...

I never realised you are from Wroclaw, Magda. It's such a pretty city, I visited it when I lived in Kraków. I live in a city which gets flooded pretty frequently so I would advise you to move anything electrical off the ground or better yet, move it upstairs. Buy loads of antiperspirant/ deodorant, baby wipes and dry shampoo in case your water goes, some bottled water, and some wellies!

Thank you. There are more districts flooded now and there is no water and electricity in some places. People are evacuated. This looks almost as bad as in 1997. However, my place was safe then and I hope it'll be OK now.

Oh I'm so sorry to hear this, Magda! How stressful for your entire town. I hope you and all your family/friends/loved ones manage to stay safe. Possessions can be replaced (though no one wants to face that situation), but people can't. Keep us posted if you can. *hugs*

Oh, we're hearing a lot about this here in Chicago, with our large Polish population. So soon after that airplane tragedy ... oh no ... Poland doesn't deserve all this!

Thanks to everyone for their concern! Things are not getting worse anymore, it's not as dangerous as it was in 1997 and there are no casualties. However, the water is still there.

Magda, I'm so sorry to hear this. My hometown has had a lot of flooding recently too - our local library is closed for at least 4 months to repair flood damage, and lots of friends and neighbors are gutting their basements to fix them. Disasters like these can bring out the best in people though, so I'm glad to see how your town is coming together just in the pics you posted to help each other out. I'll be thinking of you and hope the flooding doesn't get any worse.
